JACKOUT / Saturnalia (Slam Productions)

Let’s just say that this time, Slam Productions – the label ran by UK saxman George Haslam – has managed to surprise me. Saturnalia is not an avant-jazz or free-jazz album. Not at all in fact. JackOut is a sax/keys/drums trio, but there’s more: drummer Justin Paterson also does a lot of programming and sampling. And keyboardist-guitarist Margo Sagov actually does more programming than playing. And ex-Dreamtime Gary Curson’s saxes inhabit breath soul into these groovy tracks of world music-infused fusion with lots of ethnic percussion samples – his warm melodies are the stars of the record. Saturnalia actually comes close to a trip-hoppy form of space rock - think Astralasia, or the “world” side of Ozric Tentacles, with a strong jazz element. Surprising, quite enjoyable, and accessible too.

STEKPANNA / Starlight Barking (Slam Productions)

That’s what I was expecting from Slam: modern, intelligent, funny jazz. This Anglo-Scandinavia trio (Mads Kjølby, guitar; Steve Kershaw, bass; Peter Svärd, drums) has a few other albums under their belt. Starlight Barking is full of enlightened exchanges between long-time friends. I can hear a strong Monk influence, and a certain Mahavishnu Orchestra flavor. And wait until you hear their bold rereading of Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid”!

ARAM SHELTON’S FAST CITIZENS / Two Cities (Delmark)

Sax player Aram Shelton is a good musician and a fair improviser, but where he shines at is written-down jazz. Case in point: Two Cities, an assured slice of original compositions in a resolutely modern, creative jazz format, very Chicago-sounding, with just a touch of Sun Ra thrown in. Fast Citizens is a sextet also comprising Keefe Jackson (sax), Josh Berman (cornet), Fred Lomberg-Holm (cello), Anton Hatwich (bassist) and Frank Rosaly (drums). A fine recording. I’ll be coming back to this one. [Below: On YouTube, there’s a complete concert by this band, from December 2009. They perform several songs from the CD, including this one.]

JOHN HEARTSMAN AND CIRCLES / Music of My Heart (Jazzman Records - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

A rarity from the US West Coast: a double LP of groovy soul jazz by one John Heartsman, who used to be an in-demand session organist/flutist. Self-produced in 1977, recorded live on a shoestring budget, but the music is brutally honest. And sometimes, it border on kitsch, especially when the grooves start sounding like ‘70s porn soundtracks – yeah, you know what I’m talking about. Singer Jaince Le Von deserves a honorary menion for her soulful performance throughout. Heartsman’s lyrics stink and his melodies are predictable as hell, but there’s musicianship here, and talent, and spirit.

MARTIN REV / Stigmata (Blast First Petite - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

I’m not a fan of Suicide, but I was curious to hear this new solo CD by one of its halves, Martin Rev, since it is presented as a departure. It definitely is. Stigmata is a very specific-sounding project: 14 short instrumentals made using synthesized and treated string orchestra sounds. Gothic, nice, also a bit kitsch and pompous. Not a revelation, but unpleasant either. Clearly, Rev is pastiching classical music trends, and I like that. But the album has a very limited expressive palette.

HELIOS / Live at Triple Door (Circle into Square Records)

A short live album (live being an unusual format for this kind of instrumental music), better than Helios’ latest studio opus (Unleft). A nice selection of tunes, inspired versions. Hard to know what is pre-recorded tracks coming from the laptop and what is actual “performance,” but it’s a nice set of post-folk/post-classical ambient, in front of a sympathetic audience.
