Très beau concert duo entre deux grands noms de la musique improvisée. Enregistré en 2009 à San Francisco, mais tout frais paru. Intéressant de retourner à cette époque de Michel Doneda qui, depuis, a poussé ses techniques étendues beaucoup plus loin, au point où, aujourd’hui, un tel duo ne marcherait pas, les protagonistes étant trop éloignés l’un de l’autre. Or, en 2009, leurs approches s’alignaient très bien et Doneda passe en mode lyrique quand il le faut et suit les occasionnelles montés bruitistes d’un Frith en grande forme.

Very fine duo concert between two major names in free improvisation. Recorded in San Francisco in 2009, but just out. It’s interesting to go back to this period in Michel Doneda’s career; since then, he has been pushing his extended techniques much further, to a point where I’m sure this particular duo would not work today, the protagonists having grown too far apart stylistically. In 2009, however, their approaches aligned very well, and Doneda switches to lyrical mode when necessary and is able to follow the occasional noisy build-ups of a Fred Frith in great shape.

Je suis très impressionné par ce disque qui s’écoute d’une seule traite. Nous sommes dans une sorte de hörspiel à l’italienne, quelque part entre l’électroacoustique, la composition savante et l’improvisation libre, en compagnie du percussionniste Alessio Riccio. Celui-ci utilise aussi des parties enregistrées par le guitariste Hasse Poulsen et les vocalistes Monica Demuru et Catherine Jauniaux. Une petite équipe, donc, mais très relevée. Dix-huit pièces formant un cycle très cohérent de 66 minutes. Ce qui m’épate le plus, c’est l’absence de surcharge, de trop-en-faire. Chaudement recommandé. I am very impressed by this record that needs to be listened to in a single stitting. We’re in some kind of hörspiel Italian-style, somewhere between electroacoustics, contemporary composition, and free improvisation. Our host/composer: percussionnist Alessio Riccio. He also uses parts performed by guitarist Hasse Poulsen and vocalists Monica Demuru and Catherine Jauniaux – a small team of top players. Eighteen pieces that form a very consistent 66-minute cycle. What wows me the most here is the pacing, the total lack of overdoing-it. Highly recommended. [Below: “Il Cane E La (Sua) Nuova Vita”.]
