NOAH ROSEN & ALAN SILVA / o.i.l. orchestrated improviased lives (Improvising Beings)

Trois improvisations de 13 à 19 minutes provenant de deux concerts (2011-2012), avec Noah Rosen au piano et Alan Silva au “synthétiseur orchestral”. J’ai de la difficulté avec ce genre de son de clavier qui, à force de se vouloir riche (cordes et cuivres), finit par avoir l’air pauvre. Cela dit, Silva a toujours eu les doigts très agiles et, ici, il mène un dialogue de haut niveau avec Rosen, un virtuose. Le résultat est souvent très vif, agité, étourdissant même dans “The Road to Hell is Paved with Good Intentions”.

Three improvisations, 13 to 19 minutes in duration, taken from two live performances (2011-2012), with Noah Rosen at the piano and Alan Silva on “orchestral synthesizer.” I have a hard time with this kind of keyboard sound – a sound that wants so much to sound rich (strings and brass) that it ends up sounding poor. However, Silva always had very agile fingers and, here, he engages in high-flying dialogues with virtuoso Noah Rosen. The results are often very lively, agitated, dizzying even in “The Road to Hell is Paved with Good Intentions.”

JUHANI AALTONEN / To Future Memories: The Music of Antti Hytti (TUM Records – merci à/thanks to Braithwaite & Katz)

Le saxophoniste et flûtiste finlandais Juhani Aaltonen, a travaillé souvent avec le contrebassiste-compositeur Antti Hytti, d’abord dans des groupes d’improvisation, puis dans des projets de musique de film et des projets de plus grande envergure. Sur To Future Memories, Aaltonen s’approprie les compositions de Hytti, qu’il interprète avec une version bonifiée de son quartet, auquel il a ajouté une contrebasse et un percusionniste de plus. Double section rythmique donc. Jazz actuel lyrique, aux mélodies souvent poignantes, particluièrement dans “Kukunor”. Un peu de confusion parfois dans les basses fréquences, mais très agréable, surtout avec Iro Haarla au piano.

Finnish sax/flute player Juhani Aaltonen has often worked with bassist/composer Antti Hytti, first in free improvisation groups, then in the latter’s film music and larger projects. On To Future Memories, Aaltonen makes Hytti’s compositions his and performs them with a bonified version of his usual quartet, now augmented with an extra doublebassist and a percussionist. So we have a twin rhythm section. Lyrical creative jazz with often poignant melodies, especially in “Kukunor.” Some confusion in the lower register, but quite enjoyable, especially with Iro Haarla at the piano.

HENRIK OTTO DONNER & TUMO / And It Happened... (TUM Records – merci à/thanks to Braithwaite & Katz)

Pour ce disque, le jazzman et compositeur finlandais Henrik Otto Donner a réarrangé quelques-unes de ses compositions allant des années 1960 à 2000 pour un big band à la section de cordes surdéveloppée. Quelques-unes sont des chansons (interprétées par Johanna Iivanainen, une voix bien assurée), d’autres sont pour soliste (Juhani Aaltonen) et ensemble. Le tout est très fortement ancré dans la tradition jazz américaine, avec, dans les deux pièces plus longues, des explorations dissonnantes plus intéressantes. Le TUMO livre la marchandise, mais le corpus présenté ici est beaucoup moins exigeant que le matériel d’Occupy the World, le disque de l’ensemble avec Wadada Leo Smith.

For this record, Finnish jazzman/composer Henrik Otto Donner rearranged some of his own compositions (drawn from the 1960s to the 2000s) for a string-heavy big band. Some are songs (sung by the well-asured Johanna Iivanainen), others are pieces for soloist (Juhani Aaltonen) and ensemble. The whole thing is strongly anchored in the American jazz tradition, though the twolonger tracks include more interesting explorations into dissonance. The TUMO delivers the goods, though the material presented here is a lot less demanding than what they played with Wadada Leo Smith on Occupy the World.

KREIDLER / ABC (Bureau B)

Un nouveau Kreidler! ABC marque le 20e anniversaire du groupe. Je suis encore peu familier avec ce quartet krautrock, mais j’ai beaucoup aimé Tank (2010). Et ABC maintient le cap: six morceaux instrumentaux à la rythmique stable (mais truffée de variations), lignes simples mais imbriquées, jeux de textures, échantillons sonores à l’occasion. Peut-être plus rêveur et moins “motorik” que Tank, et fort réussi. Impossible de choisir une pièce préférée après deux écoutes. A new Kreidler! ABC marks the band’s 20^th anniversary. I’m still unfamiliar with this krautrock outfit, but I really liked their 2010 album Tank. And ABC sails the same sees: six instrumental tracks with a stable rhythm (though laced with variations), simple interlocked lines, textural plays, and occasional samples (voice, violin). Maybe a bit dreamier and less “motorik” than Tank, and quite successful. I can’t pick a favourite after two listens.
