F.S. BLUMM / Up Up and Astray (Pingipung - merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)

Après plusieurs chemins de traverse, F.S. Blumm est de retour en tant qu’artiste solo, six ans plus tard. Son huitième album solo, Up Up and Astray, vient de paraître. Jolie galette de chansons et d’airs légers, mélodieux, soigneusement arrangés et agrémentés  d’une belle brochette d’invités (Harald “Sack” Ziegler, Madeleine Jonsson, Ella Blixt, Guido Möbius, Sven Kacirek, entre autres). La musique de Blumm est toujours simple, bien sentie, accrocheuse, sans tomber dans la facilité. Cela dit, je trouve Up Up and Astray un peu trop évanescent. Mais il démarre très bien une journée en douceur.

After many side trips, F.S. Blumm is back as a solo artist, six years later, with his eighth solo album Up Up and Astray. A fine platter of light, melodious songs and tunes, finely arranged and pimented with a nice list of guest artists (Harald “Sack” Ziegler, Madeleine Jonsson, Ella Blixt, Guido Möbius, Sven Kacirek, a.o.). Blumm’s music is constantly simple, heartfelt, and catchy, without resorting to clichés. That being said, I find Up Up and Astray a bit too… evanescent. But it makes a good smooth day-starter.

  

GELBART / Vermin (Gagarin - merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)

Oh, quel merveilleux voyage psychédélo-spatio-noise que ce Vermin! Paru sur vinyle chez Gagarin (je n’ai eu qu’un transfert sur CD-R). Adi Gelbart nous arrive avec un collage halluciné d’airs rétrofuturistes. C’est Perrey & Kingsey version post-moderne. Sur la première moitié du disque, sept vignettes musicales alternant entre le mignon et le sale (souvent dans la même pièce). Sur la second moitié, deux longues pièces composées pour le film Vermin – même genre de matériel, ici présenté sous forme de collage psychédélique. Merveilleux. Et un facteur kitsch gros comme ça. Oh, what a fantastic psychedelic/SF/noise trip this Vermin is! Released as an LP on Gagarin (I only received a CD-R transfer). Adi Gelbart delivers an hallucinated collage of retro-futurist tunes. It’s a post-modern take on Perrey & Kingsey. The first half of the album features seven musical vignettes switching back and forth between cuteness and dirtyness. The second half features two long pieces written for the film Vermin – same kind of material, though in the form of a psychedelic collage. Wonderful. DAT POLITICS / Powermoon (Tigerbeat6 - merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)

La dance music, c’est pas vraiment mon fort, mais il y a quelques exceptions… comme DAT Politics, dont le nouveau EP Powermoon penche beaucoup du côté de Kraftwerk. J’ai peu d’intérêt pour la chanson en collaboration avec Soft Pink Truth, mais le reste de l’album me plaît beaucoup, particulièrement “Boogie Mind” (plutôt lente, très Computer World) et “Fox Box Sound”, joliment ridicule.

Dance music is definitely not my forte, but there are exceptions… like DAT Politics, whose new EP Powermoon leans a lot toward Kraftwerk. I have little interest in the collaboration track with Soft Pink Truth, but the rest of this EP tickles my fancy, especially “Boogie Mind” (a slow tempo that feels very Computer World-like), and the playfully ridiculous “Fox Box Sound.”

MAD/MOD / Neurinomes (Arachnidiscs)

Un duo montréalais (Marc-Antoine Dagenais aux anches, Dominic Marion à la guitare) qui fait dans la musique instrumentale ambiante – longues pièces nées de l’improvisation, mais ensuite, m’explique Marion, réapprises, intégrées sous formes de concepts structurés et semi-lâches. D’ailleurs, certaines pièces se découpent en pluieurs parties aux interrelations… inusitées, disons. Long (78 minutes), mais définitivement pas dénué d’intérêt, ce Neurinomes. Il faut être patient et se laisser envoûter par les répétitions (à ce sujet, le solo de guitare “Deaf” est un test de 24 minutes, mais c’est aussi très joli). Un piano apparaît sans crier gare dans “Funérailles”. Jetez une oreille à l’album sur bandcamp; vous verrez bien.  [Ci-dessous: Écoutez l’album sur bandcamp.]

A Montreal-based duo (reedsman Marc-Antoine Dagenais and guitarist Dominic Marion), playing instrumental non-electronic ambient music – long pieces born from free improvisations, then (as Marion explained to me) re-learned and integrated in the forms of structured concepts leaving room for further improvisations. Some of these pieces break down into parts with… unusual relationships. Neurinomes is long at 78 minutes, but definitely not without interest. But you have to be patient and let yourself get hypnotized by the repetitions (in that regard, the 24-minute guitar solo “Deaf” is a test… but it’s also quite pretty).
