FROZEN THOUGHTS / Calm Before the Storm (Glacial Movements – merci à/thanks to John Bourke P.R.)

Je n’ai trouvé aucun détail sur Frozen Thoughts, mais ce disque est une nouveauté chez Glacial Movements, une étiquette spécialisée dans la musique ambiante isolationniste. Calm Before the Storm propose de longues pièces statiques en surface, lentement transformatives en profondeur, dans les tons de blancs et de bleus glacés. Élégant, relaxant, mais sans réel caractère. Ce genre musical, aussi agréable soit-il, tend à tout ramener à un dénominateur commun, sans laisser place à l’expression d’une individualité artistique…

I haven’t found information about Frozen Thoughts, but this CD is a recent release from Glacial Movements, a label specialized in isolationist ambient music. Calm Before the Storm features long pieces that are static on the surface and slowly morphing on a deeper level, all in shades of white and icy blue. Elegant, relaxing, and lacking in character. This music genre, as enjoyable as it is, tends to drag everything down to a common denominator, leaving no room for individual artistic expression…

BVDUB & LOSCIL / Erebus (Glacial Movements – merci à/thanks to John Bourke P.R.)

…sauf exception. Comme cet Erebus, résultat d’une collaboration entre BVDub et Loscil, deux artistes de haut niveau dans ce genre musical. Forte présence des basses fréquences, ajout d’instruments, apparition de voix masculines et féminines éthérées – ici, la musique varie, se transforme, accroche l’auditeur. Même si elle demeure très calme et relaxante, elle ne se laisse pas reléguer si facilement à l’arrière-plan. “Hespiredes” respire la beauté avec un grand B. Et “Thanatos” est plus post-classique qu’ambiante. Un disque ravissant, autant en écoute profonde que superficielle, malgré certaines longueurs (dans “Hypnos”, particulièrement).  [Ci-dessous: Écoutez l’album sur bandcamp.]

…with a few exceptions, like this Erebus, a collaboration between BVDub and Loscil, two major names in this genre. A strong presence of bass frequencies, noticeable real instruments, and fleeting apparitions of male and female vocals – here, the music changes, varies, and catches your attention. Although it remains on the very calm and relaxing side, this music will not be relegated to the background as easily as Calm Before the Storm. “Hespiredes” breathes beauty with a capital B. And “Thanatos” is more post-classical than electronic ambient. A gorgeous album, suitable to both deep and superficial listening, despite some overlong passages (particularly in “Hypnos”). POSTMARKS / National Parks (Monotype – merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)

Deuxième album du duo Postmarks –D Bayne au piano et le saxophoniste Boris Hauf (d’Efzeg, entre autres) – avec, à titre d’invité, le guitariste et électroniciste Martin Siewert. Improvisations (je crois comprendre qu’un certain canevas était établi d’avance) délicates, pensives, recueillies, riches en abstraction. De temps en temps, un son électronique pur perce son chemin, question de recentrer l’attention de l’auditeur, qui tend à partir à la dérive. Pas pleinement convaincant, mais intéressant.

Second CD from Postmarks – pianist D Bayne and sax player Boris Hauf (ex-Efzeg, among other projects) – with guest Martin Siewert on guitar and electronics. Delicate, thoughtful, quiet improvisations (they were in part pre-planned from what I understand), rich in abstraction. From time to time, an electronic tone cuts through, allowing the listener to refocus his attention, which tends to start wandering during this record. Not entirely convincing, but an interesting release.
