BIRCH BOOK / Birch Book (Les Disques du 7ème Ciel)

Suprenant mini-album paru en 2011 (je viens de tomber dessus), sur lequel ce cher B’eirth (également derrière le projet In Gowan Ring) revisite sa chanson “Life’s Lace” (publiée sur A Hand Full of Days en 2009), qui contient un couplet en français. Après une réitération de l’originale, on a droit à quatre nouvelles chansons en français qui partent toute d’un vers du couplet français de “Life’s Lace” – des variations – , puis une reprise entièrement en français de “Life’s Lace” réintitulée “Vent d’automne”. Étrange projet de déconstruction-réinvention-sérialisation d’une chanson. Et charmant.

Surprising EP released in 2011 (I just stumbled upon it), on which our dear B’eirth (he’s also behind In Gowan Ring) revisits his song “Life’s Lace” (from 2009’s A Hand Full of Days). This song included a verse in French. After an iteration of the original track, we’re treated to four new songs, each using a line from that French verse as a spring board for a variation. The EP concludes with a French-only reprise of “Life’s Lace” rechristened “Vent d’automne.” Strange song deconstruction/reinvention/serialization project. And a charming EP.

MOSKITOO / Mitosis (12k – merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)

Deuxième album de Moskitoo, six ans après Drape. Mélange d’électronique ambiante, de glitch délicate et de chanson fragile japonaise. Des pièces courtes et rêveuses, à l’esthétique plutôt naïve mais bien produite. Beau, mais ça manque de signes distinctifs.

Second album by Moskitoo, six years after Drape. A blend of ambient electronica, delicate glitch, and fragile Japanese pop. Short and dreamy tracks with rather naïve aesthetics and very good production values. Nice, but it lacks distinctive traits.

RYUICHI SAKAMOTO & TAYLOR DEUPREE / Disappearance (12k – merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)

Cette autre nouveauté chez 12k est plus intéressante: interventions minimalistes au piano de Ryuchi Sakamoto et environnements/traitements sonores délicats de Taylor Deupree. Musique qui flotte et se désagrège doucement, hors du temps. Sur “Curl to Me” s’ajoute les battements de cœur d’Ichiko Aoba, pour une touche différente. Intéressant, mais un tantinet moins convaincant que les collaborations entre Sakamoto et Christian Fennesz.

This other new release on 12k is more interesting: minimal piano interventions from Ryuchi Sakamoto and delicate sound environments/treatments from Taylor Deupree. The music floats and slowly disintegrates, out of time. On “Curl to Me”, Ichiko Aoba’s heartbeat joins the mix for a different sound palette. Interesting, but slightly less convincing than Sakamoto’s collaborations with Christian Fennesz.

R. STEVIE MOORE / Personal Appeal (Care in the Community – merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)

L’étiquette Care in the Community propose une compilation consacrée à l’auteur-compositeur-interprète R. Stevie Moore. Quinze chansons qui font le tour de sa carrière par les chemins de traverse – chansons mal-aimées, moins connues (quoi qu’on puisse difficilement parler de “hits” dans son cas). Je connais peu l’œuvre de Moore et j’ai peu accroché sur ce que j’ai entendu auparavant. Cette compil respecte le caractère éclectique et bancal de ses albums, et on y trouve plusieurs moments forts, comme l’auto-explicative “Why Can’t I Write a Hit?”, “I’ve Begun to Fall in Love” et “Treat Me”. Chansons singulières obéissant à des structures déstructurées, au caractère DIY très prononcé. Cela dit, Personal Appeal n’a pas réussi à me convertir.

The Care in the Community label released a compilation of outsider-singer-songwriter R. Stevie Moore. Fifteen songs covering his whole career through less-beaten paths – neglected, lesser-known songs, although Moore never had “hits” per se. I have rarely heard Moore’s music before, and I what I have heard hasn’t stuck with me. This comp is true to the eclectic and off-kilter nature of the man’s albums, and it contains a fair number of highlights, like the self-explanatory “Why Can’t I Write a Hit?,” “I’ve Begun to Fall in Love,” and “Treat Me.” Singular songs following destructured structures, songs with a strong DIY flavour. That being said, Personal Appeal did not manage to convert me.
