Après un weekend passé à écouter du vieux soul (The
Four Tops, The Temptations, Sam & Dave, ...), du vieux Tangerine Dream et
le dernier best-of de l’Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou (cf. entrée
2013-04-09), il est temps de revenir dans le temps présent.
After a weekend spent listening to old soul music
(The Four Tops, The Temptations, Sam & Dave, ...), vintage Tangerine Dream,
and the latest Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou best-of CD (see 2013-04-09
entry), it’s time to get back to the present.
La semaine dernière, j’ai chroniqué un très bon disque
de Mulabanda, un groupe qui me faisait penser à Elephant9 et Supersilent. Je
maintiens la comparaison avec Supersilent dans le cas de Going, un autre
quatuor dont deux des membres font aussi partie de Mulabanda. L’alignement,
cette fois, consiste en les claviéristes-électroniciens Giovanni Di Domenico et
Pak Yan Lau, et les batteurs João Lobo et Mathieu Calleja. Mélange
d’improvisation et de composition sur fond de polyrythmes, claviers aux effets
très variés, parfois mélodiques, souvent texturaux. Si “Skal” montre des
longueurs, “Nagpapatuloy” et “Mynd” sont fort efficaces et, de toute manière,
ce premier opus en met plein les oreilles. Paru sur vinyle, comme le Mulabanda.

Last week I reviewed a very good record by
Mulabanda, a band who reminded me of Elephant9 and Supersilent. I maintain the
comparison with Supersilent in the case of Going, another quartet with two
members also playing in Mulabanda. The line-up this tim is
keyboardists/electronicians Giovanni Di Domenico and Pak Yan Lau, with drummers
João Lobo and Mathieu Calleja. A blend of composition and free improvisation
resting on a bed of polyrythms, with variously-effected keys that can sound
both melodious and textural. “Skal” goes on for too long, but “Nagpapatuloy”
and “Mynd” are strong tracks and, in any case, this debut LP has a lot to

BUSHMAN’S REVENGE / Electric Komle - Live! (Rune Grammofon - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)
Bushamn’s Revenge célèbrent leur dixième anniversaire
avec ce disque enregistré en concert en mai 2012. Wow! Quel feu roulant! Ce
disque élimine tous les moments plus calmes des disques précédents, pour se
concentrer uniquement sur le matériel à indice d’octane élevé. Bref, ça torche,
d’un bout à l’autre. Even Helte Hermansen est en feu. Les pièces s’enchaînent
en laissant à l’auditeur à peine le temps d’une respiration alors qu’une note
de guitare s’étire. Vous ne connaissez pas ce groupe? Commencez ici!
Bushman’s Revenge are celebrating their first
decade in action with a live album recorded in May 2012. Wow! What a
rollercoaster! This record takes out all the quieter moments from their
previous opuses and focuses solely on the high-octane material. In other words,
this one slays from start to finish. Even Helte Hermansen is on fire. Tracks
near-segue, giving you only time enough to draw in a breath as a guitar note is
stretched out, before the band lunges into the next number. You don’t know this

HEDVIG MOLLESTAD TRIO / All of Them Witches (Rune Grammofon)
Hedvig Mollestad est toute une guitariste rock. Un son
puissant, des riffs punchés, des solos flyés (c’est pourquoi elle se retrouve
chez Rune Grammofon, aux côtés de Bushman’s Revenge, Elephant9 et Motorpsycho),
appuyés par une solide section rythmique. All of Them Witches est
son second disque chez RG (je n’ai pas entendu le premier). Du power-trio instrumental
créatif et agréable, mais j’aimerais entendre Mollestad dans un contexte de
chanson – la comparaison à Led Zeppelin prendrait tout son sens.
Hedvig Mollestad is one mean guitar-heroine. A
kick-ass sound, heavy riffs, wild solos (that’s why she’s on Rune Grammofon,
alongside Bushman’s Revenge, Elephant9, and Motorpsycho), and she’s back by a
solid rhythm section. All of Them Witches is her second RG
title (haven’t heard the first one). Creative as far as guitar-led power trios
go, and enjoyable, but I would like to hear her skills applied to the song
format – throw in some vocals now and then – then a comparison with Led
Zeppelin would make sense.
