FORTNER ANDERSON / Solitary Pleasures (&records)
A nice recording made at Studio 270 with poet Fortner Anderson reciting and inhabiting his poems (presented as excerpts from a diary), backed by improvisers Michel F. Côté, Alexandre St-Onge, and San Shalabi – almost Klaxon Gueule. Dark texts and creaking music.

I didn’t know this trombonist at all before listening to this enjoyable solo album. Ten short pieces (total duration: 41 minutes). Relatively speaking, this record is a lot more melodious than the average record released by Creative Sources. And this melodic approach sounds true and is well integrated to the extended techniques used by Nørstebø. Not a groundbreaking record, but an honest one and, clearly, Nørstebø knows how to organize a convincing musical discourse.

NOAH KAPLAN QUARTET / Descendants (hatOLOGY)
Recorded in November 2008, prior to the death of Joe Maneri, with whom saxophonist Noah Kaplan has studied. And it shows. His smoot microtonal playing clearly draws much inspiration from the great master. Descendants is a beautiful record of microtonal jazz, lively at times, but introspective for the most part. Kaplan is backed by guitarist Joe Morris, Giacomo Merega on electric bass, and drummer Jason Nazary. The interaction between Kaplan and Morris is particularly fascinating – put that on the account that they both had longstanding relationships with Maneri.

A suave and mysterious baritone voice, stripped-down songs with semi-classical, semi-field recording orchestrations, impeccable production, ultra-personal universe: Werner Kitzmüller is Germany’s answer to Matt Elliott. Listen to the washed-out emotions impregnating “Stalker,” a duo with Meaghan Burke. Listen to the intolerable fragility of “Purple.” Listen to the whole album. A major discovery.  [Below: “Stalker” offered as a free download, and the whole album available for streaming.]

Pat Mastelotto and Trey Gunn have reissued their duo CD TU. It remains a bright star in the King Crimson galaxie, perfectly in phase with the late ‘90s ProjeKCts. A set of beat-driven and textural improvisations, firmly within the realm of rock, yet alien to rock music.
