DIXIE’S DEATH POOL / The Man with Flowering Hands (Drip Audio)
[CI-dessous: “Sunlight is Collecting on My Face”.]
The project of one Lee Hutzulak, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, surrounded by a fine cast of Vancouver-based musicians, among which Stephen Lyons, Shane Kraus, and Coat Cooke. The Man with Flowering Hands is a beautiful experimental psychedelic pop flight: the songs have well-defined melodies and structures, but they are set in trippy, rich and shapeshifting textures. This record evokes a plethora of similar neo-psychedelic albums from the past 15 years, without actually pointing to a specific influence. That is: Hutzulak managed to find a unique approach. Quite a discovery for fans of original psychedelia.  [Below: “Sunlight is Collecting on My Face.”]

MAHIEUX “FAMILY LIFE” QUARTET / Peaux d’âmes (Circum-Disc)
It is well known that I have a sweet spot for drummers. On Peaux d’âmes, drummer Jacques Mahieux pays tribute to jazz drummers/composers with rereadings of tunes by Shelly Manne, Denzil Best, Joe Chambers, Tony Williams, Joey Baron, and even Robert Wyatt (a sunny take on “Be Serious”). He also slips in two original compositions. His group includes Géraldine Laurent on sax, Circum guitarist Olivier Benoit, bassist Nicolas Mahieux, and (on a handful of tracks) Jérémie Ternoy on Fender Rhodes. Very jazzy, but fun and creative. Worth hearing, if only for the original composition “Mank de Monk.”

DICK WOOD / Not Far from Here (pfMENTUM)
A hote onslaught of creative jazz. I didn’t know this sax player. Well-written heads, lots of improvisation, and a fine line-up (with Dan Clucas, Chuck Manning, Marty Mansour, Hal Onserud, Dan Ostermann, and under-used electronician Mark Trayle).

MIKE PATTON / The Solitude of Prime Numbers (Ipecac)
Mike Patton’s italian adventures continue. After a record of traditional songs with orchestra (the excellent Mondo Cane), here is a film soundtrack in the purest tradition of the Italian giallo. The Solitude of Prime Numbers features 16 short instrumental tracks, most of which are focused on setting or maintaining aural suspense. Successful in what it sets out to accomplish, though not of a magnitude similar to Mondo Cane.

MIKE PATTON / Mondo Cane (Ipecac)
Well, since I mentioned it, I couldn’t resist to spin this one again. Still one of my faves from 2010, and probably my favorite disc by any Mike Patton-related project. Simply a perfect extravaganza, and almost - almost - acceptable in any social situation.
