Un trio inusité signé Wadada Leo Smith: trompette/flugelhorn, pipa (un luth chinois) et batterie, avec Min Xiao-Fen et Pheeroan akLaff. Cinq compositions de Smith qui explorent les possibilités de cet alignement original. Dark Lady of the Sonnets fait ressortir la fragilité et l’abstraction don’t Smith peut faire preuve (des traits moins mis en vidence par son grand ensemble Organic, disons). La pièce titre, la seule à être chantée (par Xiao-Fen), brille par sa beauté et l’effacement du trompettiste, qui laisse presque toute la place à Xiao-Fen et akLaff.
An unusual trio project from Wadada Leo Smith: trumpet/flugelhorn, piano (a Chinese lute), and drums, with Min Xiao-Fen and Pheeroan akLaff. Five Smith compositions exploring the possibilities of this unique line-up. Dark Lady of the Sonnets highlights of the level of fragility and abstraction Smith can reach (you won’t find these traits in his large ensemble Organic, for instance). The title track, the only piece with lyrics (sung by Xiao-Fen), stands out for its beauty and the trumpeter’s self-effacing role – it is almost a duo written from Xiao-Fen and akLaff.
Wow. Je ne suis pas un fan de Rob Mazurek, mais là, wow. Un disque court (38 minutes), bien ramassé, présentant huit compositions punchées, lumineuses, aux rythmes contagieux, sans excès, mais avec beaucoup de créativité. Très convaincant. [Ci-dessous: Un extrait de “Jagoda”.]

MATS/MORGAN BAND / Live (Cuneiform)
C’est par ce disque enregistré en concert à Stockholm en juin 1999 que le Mats/Morgan Band a attiré pour la première fois l’attention de la planète prog. Il s’était retrouvé dans toutes les listes de fin d’année; tout le monde parlait de la virtuosité, de l’énergie et de l’humour du duo (le clavériste aveugle Mats Öberg et le batteur Morgan Agren) et de leur groupe (six musiciens en tout). Cuneiform a récemment réédité ce disque, qui demeure un must pour tout fan de rock progressif complexe avec une veine Zappaesque, et un excellent point de départ.
The Mats/Morgan Band first drew the attention of the progosphere with this live album recorded in June 1999 in Stockholm. This disc had made a LOT of year-end lists; everyone was talking about the virtuoso playing, drive, and humour of the duo (blind keyboarding Mats Öberg and drummer Morgan Agren) and their six-piece. Cuneiform recently reissued this album, which remains a must-have for any fan of complex Zappaesque prog rock, and an excellent starting point.
MV CARBON / Dislodged Perihelion (Ecstatic Peace)
Un court vinyle (30 minutes) paru en édition limitée chez Ecstatic Peace (j’ai reçu un transfert sur CDr). Sept courtes chansons mutantes faites de fragments d’enregistrements de terrain et de boucles électroniques, tissées serrées, et la voix de MV qui déclame des textes obscurs sur un ton qui rappelle à la fois Anne Clark et Alexis O’Hara.
A short LP (30 minutes) released by Ecstatic Peace in a limited edition (I received a promo CDr). Seven short mutant songs made out of fragments of field recordings and electronic loops, tightly woven with MV’s voice reading obscure lyrics in a tone reminiscent of both Anne Clark and Alexis O’Hara.
FEDERICO BARABINO / Can You Listen to the Silence Between the Notes? (eh?)
Federico Barabino est un guitariste expérimental argentin. Ce court CDr chez eh? propose une pièce conceptuelle de 34 minutes pour guitare électrique et console de mixage sans entrée. Un court prologue à la guitare, très doux, sans distortion, presque folk, suivi d’un long silence, puis d’un long fondu d’onde sinusoïdale, puis quelques variations d’ondes tenues longtemps, un autre silence, et un épilogue à la guitare. Une forme simple et élégante, une approche qui rappelle froidement l’onkyo, et rien de plus.
Federico Barabino is an experimental guitarist from Argentina. This short CDr released by eh? features a conceptual 34-minute piece for electric guitar and no-input mixer. A short prologue at the guitar, very quiet, no distortion, almost folk-like, followed by a long stretch of silence, a slow fade-in of a sine wave, then a few sine wave variations, then another stretch of silence, and a guitar epilogue. A ismple and elegant form, an approach coldly reminiscent of onkyo, and nothing more.
SEEDED PLAIN / Sectional (Digital Vomit)
Je commence à apprécier de plus en plus Seeded Plain, le duo de Jay Kreimer et Bryan Day, tous deux aux instruments maison. Paru l’an dernier, Sectional propose trois pièces dans les 12 à 17 minutes, chaotiques, pleines de petits bruits, de couinements et d’exclamations. Cet album est dans la même veine que leur disque pour Creative Sources, et pas encore à la hauteur de leur collaboration avec Hal Rammel (chroniquée le 2011-12-08).
I’m really starting to dig Seeded Plain, the duo formed by Jay Kreimer and Bryand Day on homemade instruments. Released last year, Section features three tracks between 12 and 17 minutes in duration, chaotic, full of small sounds, squeaks and exclamations. This album is similar to their Creative Sources release and not yet up to par with their recent collaboration with Hal Rammel (reviewed on 2011-12-08).
