YMUSIC / Beautiful Mechanical (New Amsterdam Records)
A very fine record that, on first listen, presents itself as a contemporary chamber music CD, but the scrutating eye discovers a hybrid pop/chamebr music project. The yMusic sextet consists of classically-trained musicians active in the pop music world (with, for example, Bon Iver and Antony and The Johnsons). They perform works by composers who also walk a fine line between these worlds. The result is a set of melodic modern chamber music with echoes of Philip Glass and Steve Reich, and a certain form of post-rock too. Gabriel Kahane’s “Song” is gorgeous. So are “Beautiful Mechanical” by Son Lux and “Clearing, Dawn, Dance” by Judd Greenstein.

ITSNOTYOUITSME / Everybody’s Pain is Magnificent  (New Amsterdam Records)
itsnotyouitsme is an ambient duo consisting of violinist Caleb Burhans and guitarist Grey McMurray. Everybody’s Pain is magnificent, their third album, offers 88 minutes of music over two discs – and I recommend listening to them in separate sitting so as not to dillute the beauty of the immersive post-rock/post-classical pieces they contain. Trippy, melodic, and skillfully arranged. Recommended.  [Below: Stream the album for free.]

MORAINE / Metamorphic Rock: Live at NEARfest 2010 (Moonjune)
Moraine, a band playing instrumental progressive rock mixed in with fusion and rock-in-opposition, was on the bill of the last NEARfest (reminder: there was no NEARfest in 2011). Metamorphic Rock more than solid. The tracks from the studio album Manifest Density have gained in maturity – they have lost some of their edginess, but strangely (for me) it works out very well for them. This concert includes four new compositions and a “Disoriental Suite” pieced from the material found on Dennis Rea’s solo CD Views from Chicheng Precipice. And the group around Rea is quite different from the line-up featured on Manifest Density. All that brings added value to Metamorphic Rock, which I would recommend over the studio album.
