ÉRIC NORMAND & BENT SPOON DUO / Circuitry (Bug Incision Records)
A collaboration recorded in Calgary between Rimouski bassist/electronician Éric Normand and Bent Spoon a duo consisting of Chris Dadge and Scott Munro, both playing strings (violin and viola), sk-1 and electronics. A fine session, short but focused, a strange assemblage of disjointed noisy sounds weaving a singular soundworld, yet coherent in all its dadaism. I listened to it two times in a row, just for the pleasure of moving deeper into its sonic relationships. A VERY limited CDR release.

TREMBLING BELLS / The Constant Pageant (Honest Jon’s Records - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)
[Ci-dessous: un extrait de “Just as the Rainbow”.
You can measure the awesomeness of a band by the number of “wow”-worthy albums it releases. With Trembling Bells, I’m at three out of three. The Constant Pageant signals an evolution from Carbeth and Abandoned Love, allthewhile maintaining the same songwriting quality and intense playing. The electric guitar is more to the forefront, giving this outing a resolutely rockier side. However, the folk vein remains strong in heart+tearing songs like “Just as the Rainbow” and “Where Do i Go From You?,” the mediavelesque “Goathland” too. The comical element found on previous records is toned down though still factored in. And Lavinia Blackwall’s beautiful voice remains the main attraction, so pure and yearning. Trembling Bells is the best folk rock group since Steeleye Span. Don’t pass on them!  [Below: An excerpt from “Just as the Rainbow.” Preview the whole album here.]

PITOM / Blasphemy and Other Serious Crimes (Tzadik - merci à/thanks to Braithwaite & Katz)
A second album for this Jewish avant-jazz-rock - or something like that - group. Led by guitarist Yoshie Fruchter, this quartet sounds and feels heavy. Makes me think of a Jewish take on Zu (plus violin). Yep, that comparison’s actually quite close to it. The approach is new, but not really original, and as the record plays on, it grows predictable. That said, it’s well done and fans of avant-rock with Jewish roots steeped in avant-metal should enjoy.

FLOH DE COLOGNE / Fließbandbabys Beat-Show (Westpark)
My first meeting with this seminal freak-rock/krautrock band. Released in 1970, this LP must have sounded pretty strange at the time! Recitations (I’m German deaf), and a crazy , disjointed blend of folk and rock music. Somewhere between Pearls Before Swine and and first Faust LP. Though, in hindsight, the closest comparison I hear are the cheerful elucubrations of Czech group Ty Syčáci. Entertaining despite the language barrier.
