TOCA LOCA / Shed (Henceforth)

Toca Loca est un trio de musique contemporaine dirigé par le pianiste Gregory Oh. Les autres membres en sont le pianiste Simon Docking et la percussionniste Aiyun Huang. Shed propose quatre œuvres, une chacune par Dai Fujikura, Heinz Holliger, Andrew Staniland et Frederic Rzewski. Le Staniland est très solide dans l’écriture et fait appel à quatre instrumentistes supplémentaires (trois vents et un violoncelle), en plus d’intégrer une bande sonore. Le Rzewski (“Bring Them Home!”) est très physique, voire essouflant, et brillamment interprété. Une des pièces a été enregistrée au MMR de l’Université McGill, les trois autres à Toronto.

Toca Loca is a contemporary music trio led by pianist Gregory Oh. The other members are pianist Simon Docking and percussionist Aiyun Huang. Shed features four works, one each by Dai Fujikura, Heinz Holliger, Andrew Staniland, and Frederic Rzewski. The Staniland has very good writing and calls on four extra instrumentalists (three winds and a cello) and a tape part. The Rzewski (“Bring Them Home!”) is highly physical, exhilirating, and brilliantly performed. One of the tracks was recorded at McGill University’s MMR, the other three in Toronto.

ELLIOTT SHARP / Binibon (Henceforth)

Un radiothéâtre signé Elliott Sharp (concept et musique), sur un livret de Jack Womack, à propos du café Binibon, où il se tenait au début des années 80, et d’un autre de ses habitués, Jack Henry Abbott, qui y a assassiné un serveur, avant de devenir une coqueluche nationale à une époque où on questionnait le système carcéral. Le contenu textuel est très lourd, les personnages campés très caricaturalement, la musique parfois agressive, mais pas assez souvent. L’idée est intéressante, mais le résultat m’a déçu.

A radio play by Elliott Sharp (concept and music) on a libretto by Jack Womack, about the Binibon café in the Lower East Side, where Sharp used to hang out in the early ‘80s, and about on if its regulars, Jack Henry Abbott, who murdered a waiter there before he became a national dearheart at a time where carceral issues were debated. The lyrical content is heavy, the characters are caricatural, the music at times aggressive (but not often enough). Interesting idea, but I found the result disappointing.

KING CRIMSON / In the Wake of Poseidon [40^th Anniversary Edition] (Inner Knot)

Un mix 5.1 de Steven Wilson du second King Crimson. Très beau nettoyage. “Pictures of a City” et “Cat Food” sont splendidement spatialisées - cette dernière profite du traitement 5.1 autant que l’album Lizard, les lignes de piano de Keith Tippett rebondissant partout. Et “Groon” devient démoniaque en 5.1! Et plusieurs extras, dont une version de “Cadence and Cascade” avec la voix de Greg Lake, et plusieurs prises de “Groon” toutes aussi hallucinantes les unes que les autres. Des quatre premiers disques de KC, In the Wake... est celui que j’aime le moins, mais ça demeure une très bonne écoute, sérieusement bonifiée par cette édition.

Steven Wilson’s 5.1 mix of King Crimson’s second album. Very nice clean up. “pictures of a City” and “Cat Food” are gloriously spatialized - the latter benefits from the surround treatment as much as the Lizard album, with Keith Tippett’s piano lines coming in crisp from everywhere at once. And “Groon” sounds hellish in 5.1! And several extras, including a “Cadence and Cascade” with Greg Lake’s voice, and several takes of “Groon”, each more hallucinating than the other. Out of KC’s first four LPs, In the Wake... is the one I like the least, but it still makes for a fine listen, significantly bonified in this edition.
