WITCH / Introduction (Shadoks Music - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)
A rock band from Zambia, mid-‘70s. Witch recorded two LPs. Both have been reissued by Shadoks, first on vinyl. Then the second album, Lazy Bones was reissued on CD, and now comes the CD reissue of their debut Introduction, with the same liner notes as Lazy Bones. I think I prefer this one: more fuzz guitar, a sound both more English and authentic (it seems contradictory, but it’s not). Good grooves, a fine singer, but the lyrics are boring and it’s simply not great African rock.

TIROGO / Float (Shadoks Music - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)
J’aime bien.  [Ci-dessous: La pièce-titre trouvée sur YouTube.]
A rock band from Nigeria. Their first album (out of three) came out in 1977. A short LP but a punchy one, with a strong Fela Kuti influence and, at least to my ears, something from Santana too. This album is better than Witch’s two: more creative, more psychedelic, more visceral, with better vocals. I like a lot.  [Below: The title track found on YouTube.]

REUBER / Ring (Staubgold - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)
Bravo.
Timo Reuber (of Klangwart) is the chameleon type: each solo album is different and a new experience. Ring (his fourth for Staubgold) kicks off in kosmische musik mode: the lengthy title track sounds like Klaus Schulze! Then, we move from spacy to thumpy, with the last three tracks pushing increasingly toward beat-heavy music, leading up to “Ringfest” a trance-techno number that feels like a logical extension of the album’s opening minutes. Ring is a short record, its progression is flawless, it’s easy to listen to, and it feels timeless, since it draws heavily from the past yet never gets backward-sounding. Bravo.

ANDREW HARGREAVES / Defragment (Lacies - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)
Andrew Hargreaves of The Boats delivers a first solo album. Defragment is very similar to the work of Mark Templeton or, to a lesser extent, Peter Broderick: acoustic music sources heard through heavy digital filters. This overlaying of simple melodies and complex textures is nothing new – the first artist to have successfully pulled this trick must have been Fennesz with Endless Summer – and Hargreaves adds very little to what has been done before. Enjoyable, but I’m much more likely to revisit records by Broderick (first) and Templeton (second) before I take this one out for another spin.
