FRANK ROTHKAMM / Amerika (Flux Records)
Finally, the fourth and final part of the Tetralogy series is out. All in all: two CDs of piano works, one CD of electronic works, and one DVD of electroacoustic works. Amerika features five long piano solos (12-18 minutes each). These pieces are all highly idiosyncratic: lurching starts, long stretches of silence, moments of reverie abruptly interrupted. Once again, Rothkamm eschews expectations and dumbfounds listeners. The cover shows Rothkamm beside his piano (a spinet, actually) in the middle of a stretch of desert road to nowhere - the quintessential American landscape - wearing jeans, a hat, and... therapeutic support gloves. A polysemantic visual composition for this German-born now living in America for 20 years. Amerika is not a particularly enjoyable listen – despite its stops and starts, it tends toward the monotonous – but everything in it (concept, music, visuals) speaks… of what, actually? Alienation? The act of playing? The imperfect American melting-pot? Life? Pick your favorite.  [Below: Listen to the whole album on this official page.]

JLIAT / Guitar Hero (Jliat)
Rothkamm and Jliat share a taste for questioning and reflecting on the nature of sound and artistic creation. That said, Rothkamm’s work is clearly more “musical” than Kliat’s hyper-methodical conceptual works. Guitar Hero consists of a single track in which a musical fragment (may be his, but sounds like a Baroque-era tune) is repeated several times, starting with a synthesized sound patch recalling an acoustic guitar, and progressing to increasingly harsher patches up to a highly distorted electric guitar. So the guitar here grows dirtier with each iteration. This process recalls Jliat’s previous record where a piece of music was “performed” by a computer using different piano sound patches that were stacked one over another. A boring listen but a concept that can spark philosophical discussions on how a piece of music is perceived depending on its sonic palette.

JLIAT DASEIN THE EVENT-ACTION / The Moment of Non Signification (Jliat)
A work delivered without any detail except for a short accompanying text about esthetics, the sensible, intensity and diversity. Add to this the mention Jliat Dasein The Event-Action printed on the CD (“Dasein” is an existentialist concept by Heidegger), and we have quite a program. Except that the CD features a simple 15-minute track of a computer voice (Apple’s “Victoria” voice, if I’m not mistaken) reading a list of things interspersed with long pauses. This is not Jliat’s first project using the perfect objectiveness (and in-significance) of a computer voice to read significant content (The Beethoven Symphonies remains one of his greatest strokes of genuis), but this variation on that theme is less engaging, somehow...

PATAPHONIE / Le matin blanc (Gazul)
My good friend François Bussière had recommended this album after reading my comments on Noëtra. Well, the only relation between Noëtra and Pataphonie (besides their nationality) is their obscure status. However, it was an excellent recommendation: I love Le matin blanc. Think Henry Cow mixed with You-era Gong, with a dash of Happy the Man. Recorded in 1978. Bold, original, yet groovy and catchy too.
