MARY HALVORSON QUINTET / Saturn Sings (Firehouse 12 - merci à/thanks to Improvised Communications)
Révélée par Anthony Braxton, la guitariste Mary Halvorson possède un style de jeu unique, à la fois glissant et angulaire, aux mélodies tordues mais sensées. Saturn Sings la présente entourée de Jonathan Finlayson (trompette), Jon Irabagon (saxo alto), John Hébert (contrebasse) et Ches Smith (batterie). Ce groupe a bonne tenue dans les compositions alambiquées de Halvorson, des pièces qu’il faut apprivoiser pour en découvrir les finesses et en retenir les mélodies complexes. Du grand art. Revealed by Anthony Braxton, guitarist Mary Halvorson has developed a unique playing style, both slippery and angular, with twisted yet meaningful melodies. Saturn Sings features her surrounded by Jonathan Finlayson (trumpet), Jon Irabagon (alto sax), John Hébert (doublebass) and Ches Smith (drums). This group holds well throughout Halvorson’s convulated compositions, pieces that require a few listens before the finer details of their complex melodies can unfold. A true work of art. SIMON NABATOV / Roundup (Leo Records)
Un des albums les plus jazzés de Simon Nabatov, ici entourés de quelques-uns de ses plus fidèles collaborateurs (Nils Wogram au trombone; Matthias Schubert au saxo ténor, Ernst Reijseger au violoncelle, Tom Rainey à la batterie). Capable de piquant, Nabatov vise ici un son plus sucré, plus mélodieux, même si des pièces comme “Sunrise, Twice” et “Stuck for Good” proposent une bonne dose de dissonances (la première superpose une très belle partie de piano à un bourdon dissonant des cuivres). Un disque réussi qui nous ramène au A Few Incidences de son trio.
One of Simon Nabatov’s jazzier albums. He is surrounded herre by some of his most faithful collaborators (trombonist Nils Wogram, Matthias Schubert on tenor sax, cellist Ernst Reijserger and drummer Tom Rainey). Nabatov knows how to bite, but he is aiming at a more caressing sound on this album, even though tracks like “Sunrise, Twice” and “Stuck for Good” feature a healthy dose of dissonance (the first one superimposes a delicate piano part with a dissonant brass drone). A successful record that takes us back to his trio’s A Few Incidences CD.
SPIRIT OF THE MATTER / Zuble Land (Musea Parallele)
Un trio possiblement français, guitare/violon/theremin, claviers/électroniques et batterie, qui fait dans un space rock improvisé assez planant, avec moments de folie rigolote et insertions d’enregistrements trouvés ridicules. “Take Me to Your Leader” est particulièrement truculante et “Ublaie Stoned” est sympathique. Ce trio n’est pas une révélation, mais Zuble Land se tient bien et réussit à ressembler à bien peu de choses.
A trio, possibly French (no details included), guitar/violin/theremin, keyboards/electronics, and drums, playing rather trippy improvised space rock with moments of silliness and ridiculous found-sound recordings inserted here and there. “Take Me to Your Leader” is particulaly surprising, and “Ublaie Stoned” is fun. This trio is no revelation, but Zuble Land holds up well and manages to sound like very little else out there.
