BUNNY BECK / Sound Tapestries (Big Round Records)
It wouldn’t be fair of me to say that this record is bad. But why was I sent this? Bunny Beck is a run-of-the-mill bop pianist, as conventional and conservative as they come. Sound Tapestries is predictable, reheated, been there heard that. Most of all, it ain’t my cup of tea. So I’ll hit the stop button on track 5.

SILVIO CADOTSCH / ODEM (Unit Records)
Trombone player Silvio Cadotsch offers here a quartet session with Rafael Schilt (tenor sax), Fabian Gisler (doublebass) and Dominic Egli (drums). I like Egli, and here he does a fine job bringing fluidity to the rhythm section. Cadotsch’s compositions are slightly formal, although they tend to push toward something freer. It lacks boldness, but it’s a fine, enjoyable listen. Nothing more though.

ARTISTES VARIÉS-VARIOUS ARTISTS / Piccadilly Sunshine, Part Four (Past & Present - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)
À signaler: les prouesses vocales de Barry Ryan sur “I’ll Be on My Way Dear”, “Stop!
The fourth installment in Past & Present’s series devoted to obscure 45s from England’s late ‘60s psychedelic pop scene (i.e. songs inspired by Sergeant Pepper-era Beatles). An interesting selection, though a bit honeydripping. Worth mentioning are: Barry Ryan’s vocal prowess on “I’ll Be on My Way Dear”, the organ part on Keith Field’s “Stop! Thief”, and the excellent “The Hands on My Clock Stand Still” by Now. Everything is lifted straight from 45s and, at times, it feels like just a little more money could have made a big difference on sound quality.

CHARALAMBIDES / Emerald Message (Wholly Other)
A limited-edition CD-R (well, until its broader digital release) that followed up on the splendid A Vintage Burden, Emerald Message features four 15-minute tracks, four instrumental improvisations, often with two guitars. A very simple session, with feeling, and “Revelations” gets nicely noisy, but it’s still a minor offering in the band’s discography.
