TOHPATI ETHNOMISSION / Save the Planet (Moonjune)

Points forts: “Save the Planet”, “Let the Birds Sing” et “Battle Between Good & Beast” (splendide duo de percussions). [Ci-dessous: “Save the Planet” en concert.]

Tohpati, guitarist in the fantastic Indonesian fusion-jazz band simakDIALOG, presents here his own band Tohpati Ethnomission. In this smoking quintet are simakDIALOG percussionist Endang Ramdan, a very young drummer, an Indonesian flute player, and a monster bassist (Indro Hardjodikoro - he opens the CD with a sinuous riff on the title track). Excellent fusion jazz where the Indonesian element is very present, marvelously integrated and extremely convincing. Singer Lestari adds a poignant traditional song to “Sacred Dance”. For the rest, the group delivers brilliant instrumental tunes. Highlights: “Save the Planet”, “Let the Birds Ùsing” and “Battle Between Good & Beast” (a splendid percussion duo).

A very powerful sax/electric bass/drums trio in a jazz-punk-skronk vein that hits the plexus more strongly than the head. These guys are “borrowing” themes left and right - “Whole Lotta Love” is pretty hard to miss in the middle of “Barghest.” Fun and ballsy and bitchy.

PREMIATA FORNERIA MARCONI / Jet Lag (Esoteric)

This record has been put down by a lot of people. And why, exactly? What does it miss that Chocolate Kings had? Same singer (his voice is an acquired taste, granted), a jazzier sound - the pastoral feel of Per un amico is out. But the writing is still strong, and shines in the nine-minute title track and in “Cerca la lingua,” among other highlights. Plus, the recent reissue adds a period 15-minute rendition (1977) of “La Carozza di Hans,” a key track from PFM’s first LP - exhilirating. I’m an fan of PFM, all eras included. Period.
