RAN SLAVIN / The Mediterranean Drift (Crónica - merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)
Très beau et troublant disque de l’électroacousticien Ran Slavin, un Israélien, sur un thème maritime qui peut très bien s’interpréter aussi selon le prisme géopolitique (les titres des pièces ouvrent la porte en ce sens. 43 minutes de riches bourdons et d’ambiances troubles et de recherche texturale qui oscille entre la nostalgie (l’aspect liquide) et la peine (l’aspect grattement). Le plus beau dans tout ça, c’est que The Mediterranean Drift est disponible gratuitement en téléchargement haute qualité, puisqu’il est paru dans la collection gratuite de l’étiquette Crónica.
Beautiful and troubling record from Israeli electroacoustician Ran Slavin, on a marine theme that can easily be interpreted through the geopolitical lens (the track titles already open that window). 43 minutes of rich drones, fuzzy moods and textural experiments ranging from nostalgia (the liquid facet) to sorrow (the grating facet). The best thing is that The Mediterranean Drift is released by the Crónica label as a FREE high-quality download.
ON / Something That Has Form and Something That Does Not (Type - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)
Petit rappel: On = Sylvain Chauveau + Steven Hess. Ce troisième disque (après une pause) suit le même principe établi sur les deux premiers: une séance d’improvisations en studio qu’on confie ensuite à un tiers invité qui montera, remixera, triturera à sa guise. Cette fois-ci: Christian Fennesz. Celui-ci a créé une très jolie séquence de cinq pièces réparties entre le larsen et l’ambiant. À 20 minutes, “The Sound of White” (très planante) devient longuette, mais le reste de l’album est solide et clairement marqué par la touche de Fennesz.
A little reminder: On = Sylvain Chauveau + Steven Hess. Their third release (after a hiatus) carries on with the recipe established on the first two: a studio improvisation session handed out to a third party guest to edit, remix and manipulate as he or she wishes. This time around, the guest is Christian Fennesz. He has created a mighty fine sequence of five tracks ranging from feedback extravaganza to quiet experimental ambient. At 20 minutes, “The Sound of White” (very quiet) gets a bit too long, but the rest of the album is strongly and clearly bears Fennesz’s touch.
GREIE GUT FRAKTION / Stadt Mixe (Monika Enterprise - merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)
En appui au récent long-jeu Baustelle (chroniqué le 2010-06-01), Greie Gut Fraktion (Antye Greie et Gudrun Gut) ont sorti un maxi-simple de la chanson “Wir Bauen Eine Neue Stadt” (elle-même une reprise d’un tube de Palais Schaumburg en 1981). Au menu: une version courte, un long remixe signé Alva Noto (sympathique mais sans plus) et deux remixes de Wolfgang Voigt (l’homme derrière l’étiquette techno Kompakt), qui se concentre sur la piste de piano pour produire une version plutôt ambiante et une autre à la rythmique très appuyée. Belle variété, mais ça reste un maxi, donc redondant.
To support the recent full-length release Baustelle (reviewed in entry 2010-06-01), Greie Gut Fraktion (Antye Greie and Gudrun Gut) have just released a maxi-single of the track “Wir Bauen Eine Neue Stadt” (a cover of a 1981 hit song by Palais Schaumburg). It features an edit of track, a long remix by Alva Noto (nice, but nothing more), and two remixes by Wolfgang Voigt (the man behind the techno lobal Kompakt), who focuses on the piano track to produce a rather ambient version and a beat-heavy version. Nice diversity, though it remains a maxi-single and, as such, gets redundant as a through-listen.
MERZBOW / Suzume: 13 Japanese Birds Pt. 1 (Important Records)
Je viens de me procurer la série complète des 13 Japanese Birds de Merzbow (publiés séparément à raison d’un par mois en 2009-2010, puis réunis en une édition complète limitée sous forme de boîte [outrageusement chère] puis sous forme de sac [beaucoup plus abordable]). J’avais déjà les deux premiers, mais question de me rafraîchir la mémoire, je repars du numéro un et je vais me les farcir à raison d’un disque par jour. Suzume est tout simplement splendide, du grand Merzbow, ici à la batterie et aux électroniques. Quel mur de son! On sent une inspiration de la “fire music”, mais quel délire de tapochage enterré par le bruit des électroniques. Exaltant. La courte “Fandangos in Space” est un étonnant “single” (presque). Et quelle rigolade que ce fondu en fermeture dans “Red Bird of Summer Part 2”, après 20 minutes d’énergie brute où il est clair que Merzbow pourrait poursuivre ainsi pendant des heures. I just bought the complete 13 Japanese Birds series by Merzbow (first released separately, one CD a month, in 2009-2010, then collected in an outrageously high-priced limited-edition box, now collected in a very reasonably-priced bag). I already had Vols. 1 & 2, but since I’m going to listen to them in order, one per day, I thought I might as well start again from the beginning. Suzume is a splendid Merzbow opus. He’s here at the drum kit with electronics. What a wall of sound! You can feel the “Fire Music” inspiration throughout, but what a crazy set of pummeling drowned in noise electronics. Exhilirating. The short “Fandangos in Space” could almost be a single (not!). And what a laugh to hear the 20-minute “Red Bird of Summer Part 2” end on a fade out - it makes sense, since you feel like Merzbow could go on for hours without relenting on the brutal energy level of this piece.
