OREN AMBARCHI / Intermission 2000-2008 (Touch - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

Almost everything Oren Ambarchi does is worth its weight in gold. So I don’t mind if he’s reaching to the bottom drawer. Especially since that drawer contained some serious nuggets. Intermission 2000-2008 culls tracks by the great experimental ambiant guitarist/multi-instrumentalist previously released on compilation albums and limited-edition vinyl releases (and one unreleased track). Five tracks for one hour of music. I’ll mention: “Iron Waves”, a remix of a song by Paul Duncan, splendid; “Intimidator”, a collaboration with pianist Anthony Pateras; “A Final Kiss on Poisoned Cheeks”, a live recording released as a 12” on Table of the Elements. Highly recommended. This CD hass less thematic unity as Ambarchi’s previous Touch releases, but it still offers an intense listening experience.

RICHARD SKELTON / Landings (Type Records - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

Drone guitar, some cello too, assembled into quiet and bewitching tracks devoid of melodies or rhythms. There’s a ton of records out there in that abstract ambient music niche, but Richard Skelton proves to be very attentive to detail. Very well done.

JOSEPHINE FOSTER / Graphic as a Star (Fire Records - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

I was already under the spell by the end of the first of the 26 tracks. For this new album, Josephine Foster – America’s most singular voice – put into songs 26 of Emily Dickinson’s poems, using the simplest of arrangements: acoustic guitar and vocals. A stripped-down record, a lot more so than This Coming Gladness (her previous opus, which made my year-end list in 2008). I miss Victor Herrero’s acid guitar, but the timeless quality of Foster’s melodies can stand on their own. [Below: On this page, you’ll find a player offering sound clips of the album.]

CHANCE:RISIKO / Sleep Talking (altrOck)

Today’s surprise: an Italian band whose singer is strongly reminiscent of Thom Yorke, and an album on which half the tracks bring to mind Radiohead (OK Computer era) if they had REALLY been playing prog rock instead of faking it. The rest of the album edges toward avant-prog (I’m mostly thinking Univers Zero and X-Legged Sally). Is this their debut? Well, it’s very strong, catchy, maybe a bit pompous in the arranging department. And it finally asks the question: What’s wrong with salamanders?
