I MIGHT BE WRONG / Circle the Yes (Sinnbus - merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)

A fun German alternative pop group, with light but well-textured electro-pop songs. Aerial melodies, quiet but efficient female vocalist (Lisa von Billerbeck), charming songs. Nothing to write home about, but well done, and done with talent and class.

SEPTEMBER COLLECTIVE / Always Breathing Monster (Mosz - merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)

A third one for September Collective (Barbara Morgenstern, Stefan Schneider, Paul Wirkus). This time around, all three are working from recordings made on a church organ prepared with MIDI programming. The sounds of the organ are the heart and soul of this record and, as a result, the music has a strong introspective side - no bombast though. Short pieces with a modal and monacal sense of melody, richly textured. Worth comparing to the latest Supersilent (played on three Hammond organs). Beautiful stuff. Must re-explore later. [Below: “Nachthorn,” a track from the album.]

BILL WELLS, ANNIE WHITEHEAD, STEFAN SCHNEIDER & BARBARA MORGENSTERN / Paper of Pins (Karaoke Kalk - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

Released at the same time as Always Breathing Monster (above) but on a different label is this second collaboration between Scottish pianist Bill Wells, trombonist Annie Whitehead (Penguin Café Orchestra), and electronicians Stefan Schneider (To Rococo Rot) and Barbara Morgenstern. Paper of Pins is almost soft jazz and relies near exclusively on delicate piano motifs and quiet trombone melodies. The electronics are cosmetic at best. Nice and velvety, but a tid bit too eventless. Still, perfect for fans of Norwegian jazz outfit In the Country.

2e écoute/2nd listen: DO MAKE SAY THINK / Other Truths (Constellation)

I am bewitched and fulfilled by Do Make Say Think’s latest, which I rate higher than their previous two. If you’re looking for excellent post-rock that represents the best of what can be found in that genre, you’re there.

2e écoute/2nd listen: HILDEGARD LERNT FLIEGEN / ...vom fernen Kern der Sache (Unit Records)

And if you like your jazz subversive and wacky, twisted by a retro-anarchist prism, look no further. I LOVE THIS RECORD! The music, the lyrics, Andreas Schaerer’s voice (and mustache in the video for “Seldom was covered with snow and an old oak,” replete with typewriter part, soooo retro!), Peter Baeder’s drawings - the whole package! Avant-jazz meets the Squirrel Nut Zippers’ swing and Mr. Bungle’s ballads, all rolled in lounge flour (I am 100% serious here).
