ARTISTES VARIÉS-VARIOUS ARTISTS / An Anthology of Chinese Experimental Music 1992-2008 (Sub Rosa - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

Okay, I’ve gone through all four CDs of this boxset (I posted a partial comment as part of my diary entry for 2009-08-06. It is a rather exhaustive survey of the experimental electronica scene in – and around – China, a scene I knew little of prior to this set, so I’m not able to evaluate the relevance of the track selection. The palette of styles runs from musique concrete to sound collage, down-and-dirty noise, and textural ambient. Disc 1 focuses on electronics and electroacoustics, while discs 2 and 3 weigh more toward noise (while covering other stuff too); finally, disc 4 is geared toward collages and mixed pieces (tape and instruments). I came out of it mostly with amplified respect for the the artists I already knew: Wang Changcun, Dickson Dee, Wang Fan. I also liked the contributions of Wu Quan, Nara, Pei, and Simon Ho, among others. I will be featuring this set in a Delire Actuel segment soon. By the way, there is little artist crossover between this ambitious set and the China: The Sonic Avant-Garde double-CD set compiled by Dajuin Yao and released on Post-Concrete in 2003.

STEPHAN MOORE / To Build a Field (Deep Listening Institute)

I mostly knew Moore as one half of the electroacoustic duo Evidence. This CD culls works written between 2002-2008 for dances. The pieces range from six to 23 minutes, and they are all relatively calm and peaceful. They develop slowly and gracefully – to the point where they get a bit too aerial. This slight lack of substance is balanced out by the CD’s high level of cohesion, making To Build a Field a pleasant listen, either as background music or as a deep listening experience.

ARPIA / Racconto D’Inverno (Musea)

Arpia’s third album. Arpia is the project of Italian singer and multi-instrumentalist Leonardo Bonetti. The man avoids the alone-in-my-basement-with-my-multitrack-set-up syndrome, drafting in a good female singer (leading to pretty male/female vocal arrangements), an acoustic guitarist, and a drummer. Racconto D’Inverno is a concept album about a novel written by Bonetti, but the whole booklet is in Italian, so I won’t attempt to get into that. Musea’s advertisement name-drops King Crimson, Hammill, and Banco as similar acts, but it’s all wrong, as this is mainly Italian neo-prog – and well done so, might I add. If you want comparisons, better go with Finisterre, Mindflower, and, stretching it a bit, early PFM. Strong songwriting.

NURSE WITH WOUND / Drunk with the Old Man of the Mountains (Jnana)

I just bought this 1987 Nurse with Wound album out of curiosity – it’s an era of the band I know next to nothing about. Very strong. The beatbox sounds betray the era, but this album is mostly about excellent surreal sound collages with a noisy quality (not too much, though), ongoing astonishment for the ears and the brain, which desperately tries to draw corelations between seemingly unrelated sonic items. A great vintage.

ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE MELTING PARAISO U.F.O. / Recurring Dream and Apocalypse of Darkness (Important Records)

Released in 2008, this CD features two near-interchangeable extended tracks. The band is credited as AMT & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O., but it actually sounds much closer to an AMT & The Cosmic Inferno album: no softer trippy tracks, no suites, little changes in mood and direction. Each piece consists in a monolithic riff repeated relentlessly, over which fuzzed-out guitars and spaced-out synths keep coming at you. It may be some form of statement, or it may be simply a weak AMT release. It shakes off the dust, and it even carries you for a while, but it gets tiresome too quickly.
