QUATUOR BOZZINI / À chacun sa miniature (Collection QB)
Le quatuor à cordes montréalais vient de publier un album double colligeant 31 pièces courtes par 31 compositeurs ayant participé à son atelier-laboratoire annuel “Composer’s Kitchen”. Je m’attendais à beaucoup de variété, mais force est de constater que les jeunes compositeurs d’aujourd’hui se concentrent surtout sur les textures rêches et troubles, les glissandos microtonaux et le minimalisme formel. Ce n’est pas une mauvaise chose en soi, mais ça devient un peu lourd, et les pièces se suivent et se ressemblent, tandis que l’esprit peine à départager leurs auteurs.
The Montreal-based string quartet has just released a 2-CD set compiling 31 short pieces by 31 composers who have taken part to their annuel “Composer’s Kitchen” lab/workshop. I was expecting a high level of diversity, but as it turns out, young upcoming composers of today seem to focus mostly on gritty, troubled textures, microtonal glissandi, and formal minimalism. Now that there’s anything wrong with that, but it gets a little leaded, and the tracks end up sounding pretty much all the same, as the mind struggles to differenciate between composers.
MARJOLAINE CHARBIN & FRANS VAN ISACKER / Kryscraft (Creative Sources)
Je ne pense pas connaître déjà ces deux improvisateurs belges. Marjolaine Charbin est pianiste; Frans van Isacker joue du saxo alto. Ensemble, ils font de l’improvisation libre très menue, microsonique, qui rappelle fortement le courant onkyo ou encore le travail des français Hubbub. Belle tension, quelques trouvailles au chapitre des techniques étendues.
I don’t think I have crossed the path of these two Belgian improvisers yet. Marjolaine Charbin is a pianist; Frans van Isacker plays alto saxophone. Together, they perform extremely thin free improvisation - microsonic if you will. Strongly reminiscent of the onkyo movement or the work of French group Hubbub. Nice tenion in the music, and a few unique extended techniques.
À paraître en janvier 2012: un nouveau disque de Matt Elliott qui, après sa trilogie des Songs, entrerepend un projet beacoup plus acoustique. La même voix suave, grave et sombre; des textes parfois crus, parfois troublants; un apport électronique beaucoup plus discret, sauf à deux ou trois endroits. Un homme, sa guitare et ses chansons, plus quelques arrangements judicieusement choisis. Puissant. Trois chansons font plus de neuf minutes. [CI-dessous: “Dust Flesh and Bones”.]
To be released in January 2012: a new album from Matt Elliott who, after his Songs trilogy, is taking a more downright acoustic turn. The same suave, low and sombre voice; raw and troubling lyrics, a more subtle use of electronics. One man, his guitar and his songs, plus a few finely-chiselled arrangements. A powerful opus.
