JOËLLE LÉANDRE & PHILIP GREENLIEF / That Overt Desire of Object (Relative Pitch Records)
Une nouvelle étiquette de jazz actuel est née et fait appel à Joëlle Léandre et Vinny Golia pour ses deux premières productions – ce n’est pas rien! That Overt Desire of Object met la grande contrebassiste française en duo avec l’anchiste Philip Greenlief, qui passe de la clarinette au saxo soprano, alto et ténor. Une série de courts duos, plus un solo de Léandre. Une belle production, un son clair, une belle connivence entre les protagonistes. Et Léandre livre la marchandise.
A new avant-jazz label is born, and calls on Joëlle Léandre and Vinny Golia for its first two releases – nothing less! That Overt Desire of Object puts the great French bassist alongside reedsman Philip Greenlief who switches from clarinet to soprano, alto and tenor sax. A series of short duets, plus a Léandre solo. A fine production, clear sound, nice interplay between the improvisers. And Léandre delivers, as usual.
VINNY GOLIA QUARTET / Take Your Time (Relative Pitch Records)
Une belle session entre quatre musiciens habitués de se côtoyer: Bobby Bradford, Ken Filiano, Alex Cline et Vinny Golia, qui signe toutes les compositions. Un jazz actuel intense, dans la veine free jazz à l’américaine. Bradford en bonne forme. Satisfaisant.
A fine session between four musicians used to each other: Bobby Bradford, Ken Filiano, Alex Cline, and Vinny Golia who penned all the compositions. Intense creative jazz, in an American free jazz vein. Bradform is in good shape. Satisfying.
GRÜNES BLATT / Thirteen Ways (Unit Records)
Un sextuor de jazz créé par le contrebassiste Dominique Girod et la chanteuse roumaine Irina Ungureanu dans le but de revisiter le répertoire traditionnel roumain. Un beau disque qui n’hésite pas à insufler de la dissonance et de l’improvisation dans ces chansons, au demeurant très belles. Très suisse comme rendu (créatif mais élégant et sobre. Instrumentation: voix, trompette, violon, guitare, piano, contrebasse – pas de percussions! [CI-dessous: Une chanson de l’album.]
A jazz sextet created by doublebassist Dominique Girod and Romanian singer Irina Ungureanu to revisit Romanian traditional folk songs. A very fine record where the songs – beautiful to start with – are approached with dissonance and improvisation in mind. It sounds resolutely Swiss in the delivery – creative yet elegant and sober. A drum-less instrumentation of voice, trumpet, violin, guitar, piano, and doublebass. [Below: A track from the album.]
UNIFAUN / Unifaun
Du dernier album d’Agents of Mercy (Roine Stolt et Nad Sylvan), j’ai décidé de m’aventurer du côté de Unifaun, le projet de Sylvan qui avait attiré l’attention de Stolt. Ce disque éponyme paru en 2008 est splendide, ni plus ni moins. L’objectif avoué de Sylvan et de son compère Christian Thordin consistait à créer des chansons qui auraient pu appartenir au répertoire de Genesis entre The Lamb... et Wind & Wuthering. C’est tellement au poil que ça en est hallucinant. Jusqu’à la voix, que Sylvan fait fléchir entre Gabriel et Collins, en poussant une pointe de Fish à l’occasion. Hyper divertissant ET solide.
From the last album by Agents of Mercy (Roine Stolt and Nad Sylvan), I decided to venture toward Unifaun, Sylvan’s project that attracted Stolt’s attention in the first place. This eponymous release from 2008 is nothing short of splendid. The admitted goal of Sylvan and his consort Christian Thordin was to create songs that “could” have been in Genesis’ repertoire between The Lamb... and Wind & Wuthering. It’s so well down it’s hallucinating. Down to the vocals, which Sylvan makes sound Gabriel-like or Collins-like at will, with an occasional Fish accentuation, just for fun. A thrilling piece of prog entertainment.
