A HAWK AND A HACKSAW / Cervantine (LM Diplication)
Un nouveau Hawk and a Hacksaw: écoute parfaite de weekend - les mélodies aux accents hébraïques me transportent loin, la qualité des instrumentistes aussi. Ce groupe mérite une meilleure place dans le domaine des musiques du monde réactualisées sans être dénaturées, à côté de Gothart.
A new A Hawk and a Hacksaw: the perfect weekend listening - their Jewish-inspired melodies carry me far away, and so does the musicianship. This band deserves a better place in the field of reactualized/non-denaturized traditional music, alongside Gothart.

Très beau début de journée en compagnie de Codes in the Clouds, un groupe post-rock anglais dont j’ai manqué le premier disque. Mais ce deuxième effort est délectable. Pas original, soit, mais très réussi. De courtes pièces de post-rock bien senti, avec tout le “cinématique”, le “mélancolique” et “l’emphatique” qu’on attend du genre. Oui, on colle un peu trop à la formule, mais les fans de Mogwai et de God is an Astronaut ne s’en formaliseront pas. [Ci-dessous: Écoutez des extraits de l’album sur cette page. Very nice day opener, this record from British post-rock outfit Codes in the Clouds, whose debut release I missed. This sophomore effort, however, is delectable. Not a tad bit original, but very well done. Short, moving post-rock tracks with all the “cinematic”, “melancholic” and “emphatic” expletives usual to the genre. Yes, it sticks a little too much to the formula, but fans of Mogwai and God is an Astronaut won’t mind. [Below: Listen to clips from the album on this page. HANNA HARTMAN / H^2 (Komplott - merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)
Ma première exposition au travail de Hanna Hartman, une Allemande qui fait de l’excellente prise de son de terrain, ces sons capturés et excisés de leur contexte étant ensuite recomposées à travers des sons d’instrumentistes. H^2 propose cinq compositions (8 à 15 minutes), la plupart très douces, auxquelles participent, entre autres, Andrea Neumann et Sabine Ercklentz. J’ai été particulièrement frappé par “Circling Blue”, dans laquelle la voix d’une soprano se mélange au son d’un train qui passe. L’effet obtenu est sidérant, très musical et merveilleusement utilisé comme leitmotiv compositionnel.
My first exposure to the work of Hanna Hartman, a talented German field recordist who captures and excises exquite sounds, which she then mixes in with musician-made sounds. H^2 features five 8-to-15-minute compositions, most of them very quiet. Andrea Neumann and Sabine Ercklentz are among the musicians contributing. I am particularly fond of “Circling Blue” in which a soprano’s voice blends in with a passing train. The result is striking, highly musical, and marvelously used as a compositional leitmotiv.

Ambiant, élégant sans devenir froidt, très bien léché, agréable. Tout ça, mais pas vraiment marquant.

ANTHONY BRAXTON / Septet (Pittsburgh) 2008 (New Braxton House)
Fans d’Anthony Braxton, portez attention: ceci est gigantesque. Vous avez bien lu ci-dessus: “New Braxton House”. L’étiquette Braxton House a été remise sur rails, en version virtuelle, et à compter du 1er mars 2011 commence à mettre à la disposition du grand public: 1) les disques épuisés de Braxton et; 2) une série de bootlegs officiels et d’enregistrements inédits, le tout disponible en téléchargement seulement, à la pièce ou par abonnement. Et question de lancer la bête, l’étiquette offre ce Septet (Pittsburgh) 2008 tout à fait gratuitement! Voici donc le septet (sensiblement le même qui se présentera au FIMAV 2011 en mai) dans “Composition No. 355”, enregistrée le 30 mai 2008 à Pittsburgh. Excellent son et une solide pièce au rythme insistant, avec de nombreux passages en petits groupes - le duo entre Taylor Ho Bynum et Mary Halvorson vaut le déplacement à lui seul.
Anthony Braxton fans, PAY ATTENTION, for this is huge news. You read the title right: “New Braxton House.” The Braxton House label has been revived as a download-only netlabel and, starting March 1, 2011, it starts offering: 1) Braxton’s deleted catalog, and; 2) a series of official bootlegs and previously unavailable live recordings, all as download releases, in pay-per-download and subscription schemes. And just the release the beast, the label offers a free release: this Septet (Pittsburgh) 2008. So here is the septet – basically the same one that will perform at FIMAV 2011 in May – in “Composition No. 355,” recorded on May 30, 2008 in Pittsburgh. Excellent sound and a strong piece with an insisting pulse and many small-group passages - the duet between Taylor Ho Bynum and Mary Halvorson is in itself worthy of your time.
PHILIPPE PETIT / Nyctalopia (Electronic Musik)Philippe Petit ne chôme pas. Paraît ce court album en téléchargement gratuit chez le netlabel Electronic Musik, alors que Sub Rosa vient d’annoncer la publication d’un nouvel opus (je vous en parle dès que je le reçois). Nyctalopia est une délicate suite de musique ambiante en six parties, vraiment plus tranquille que la moyenne des albums de Petit. Et imparfaite (par exemple, certains choix de déplacements stéréo sont douteux). On comprend et le choix du label et le choix de l’offrir gratuitement. Il s’agit d’une œuvre mineure, mais attention: pas dénuée d’intérêt pour autant. Qu’y perdez-vous de toute manière? [Ci-dessous: Allez-y, écoutez!]
Philippe Petit is quite the working man. This short opus comes as a free download from netlabel Electronic Musik jsut as Sub Rosa announces the release of another album (I’ll report on it as soon as I receive it). Nyctalopia is a delicate ambient music suite in six parts, quite mquieter than Petit’s average album. And imperfect (for instance, some stereo movements are, well, dubious). One understands the choice of label and the decision to release it as a free item. It is a minor opus, but it is not uninteresting per se. And what do you have to loose?
