ANTHONY DE MARE / Speak! The Speaking-Singing Pianist (Innova)
My first encounter with pianist Anthony De Mare was on a CRI record, and I was instantly marked by his untamed energy and spot-on emotivity. Here he is in a solo program where each piece required from the pianist to sing and speak in addition to playing. So the virtuoso pianist also becomes a theatre actor. And it works out marvelously well. Most of the music on this long record was written for him, especially “Sunflower Sutra” (21 minutes) by Jerome Kitzke and “De Profundis” (30 minutes) by Frederic Rzewski, respectively using texts by Allen Ginsberg and Oscar Wilde. Both pieces are tours de force. The first one, in the hands of a less extroverted pianist, would have miserably failed, but performed by the fiery De Mare, it literally vibrates. A splendid, astounding record that renews my support of this unique contemporary music pianist.

ESTHER LAMNECK & ROBERTO FABBRICIANI / Winds of the Heart (Innova)
The pairing of a tárogató (a Hungarian instrument that’s a cross between a clarinet, an oboe, and a soprano sax) and the hyperbass flute (a gigantic instrument created by Roberto Fabbriciani). 14 short improvisations. Lamneck uses circular breathing, Fabbriciani thunders in the low register. Interesting but static.

Z’EV / as/if/when (Sub Rosa - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)
I have already covered the LP release of this album earlier this year. The CD version adds a third piece (11 minutes) from 1983 to the ones from 1978 and 1982. It represents another example of Z’ev systematic deployment of energy in live settings without actually adding scope to the sound palette developed (percussive and resonating objects dragged, thrown and revolved around in a very physical manner). Choose your format as you please - both versions adequately portray this nevralgic era in Z’eV artistic development.
