WILLIAM PARKER / I Plan to Stay a Believer: The Inside Songs of Curtis Mayfield (AUM Fidelity - merci à/thanks to Improvised Communications)

This record was nine years in the making; nine years of live recordings with this Curtis Mayfield tribute project. And Parker gets to the essence of Mayfield’s soul music, to find the “inside songs”, the songs within the song – and the bassist’s highly spiritual philosophy is a perfect fit with this repertoire and this particular approach. What we have here are long, highly modified readings of Mayfield’s songs - modified, but consistently accessible. In fact, I Plan to Stay a Believer is by far William Parker’s most mainstream record to date. Use it to turn your less adventurous friends on to this man’s playing and work! The basic group are Parker consists of Hamid Drake (drums), Dave Burrell (piano), Lewis Barnes (trumpet), Darryl Foster and Sabir Mateen (saxes and flutes), and singer Leena Conquest. Poet Amiri Baraka joins in on several tracks, the New Life Tabernacle Generation of Praise Choir contributes to two cuts, and a Paris-based children’s choir is hear on two other tracks. Brilliant, positive, enlightening, spirited – this record is a celebration of life. Highly recommended, despite a few audio shortcomings (recording quality occasionally disappoints, fade-ins and fade-outs occasionally ill-designed). [Below: No official audio clip released yet (the album comes on Sep. 14), but here’s a recent live performance.]

DAVID S. WARE / Onecept (AUM Fidelity - merci à/thanks to Improvised Communications)

Let’s carry on with William Parker, here improvising with sax giant David S. Ware in a trio rounded up by drummer Warren Smith (who was of Bill Dixon’s final musical endeavour). Onecept because in this concept album, Ware plays three instruments (tenor sax, stritch, saxello), but follows one single direction. A passionate free jazz session, busy and thrilling. With Saturnia, Ware had come back after a health-related hiatus. Onecept proves that the man has recouped from life’s challenges, and neither his lungs nor his heart have suffered.

FOND OF TIGERS / Continent & Western (Drip Audio)

Number three for Vancouver-based septet Fond of Tigers who keeps on travelling on their own course. On first listen, I find Continent & Western less striking than Release the Saviours, but it’s still a good vintage. This one features to special guests: Sandro Perri sings on the enjoyable “Vitamin Meathawk”, while Mats Gustafsson throws his sax into the melee on “Grandad.” The band’s guitarist Stephen Lyons also sings a song, the album closer “Upheaval”, a very quiet affair. The rest of it is what I have come to expect from this band: skronk-infused post-rock – or is that textural avant-prog? Fond of Tigers have found their own niche.
