Les disques Navona sont de la haute classe, et cet album d’œuvres vocales - des lieders, ni plus ni moins - ne dément pas cette réputation. Sont regroupées ici des œuvres ou cycles d’œuvres de Brendan McConville, Paul A. Epstein, Hendrik Hofmeyr, Norman Mathews, Edward Ficklin et David Del Tredici. Melissa Manseau est la soprano à l’honneur (trois des six œuvres), plus les sopranos Melani Mitrano et Peggo Hodes, ainsi que la mezzo-soprano Krista River (une œuvre chacune). L’instrumentation d’accompagnement est restreinte: piano seul dans deux cas, pour le reste piano et un (percussions, violoncelle) ou deux instruments (flûte et violoncelle). Beaucoup de beauté, et dans bien des cas un travail fin entre tonalité et atonalité. Des œuvres plutôt accessibles, peut-être même un tantinet passéiste, mais très beau, tout particulièrement les “Rossetti Songs” de Mathews.

Navona records are top of their class, and this album of vocal works – modern lieders, basically – doesn’t disappoint. Rapport culls works or cycles by Brendab McConville, Paul A. Epstein, Hendrik Hofmeyr, Norman Mathews, Edward Ficklin, and David Del Tredici. Melissa Manseau is the featured soprano (three works out of six), with sopranos Melani Mitrano and Peggo Hodes, and mezzo-soprano Krista River performing one work each. The accompanying instrumentation is limited to solo piano on two cases, and piano plus one instrument (percussion, cello) or two instruments (flute and cello). Lots of beauty and, in most cases, some delicate back-and-forth between tonal and atonal approaches. This music is rather accessible, and even a bit backward-looking, but it’s gorgeous, especially Mathews’ “Rossetti Songs.”

ANDY JAFFE / An Imperfect Storm (Big Round Records)

Paru sur un subsidiaire de Parma (qui a aussi Navona), ce disque met en vedette les compositions et arrangements pour big band d’Andy Jaffe. Le Bill Lowe/Andy Jaffe Big Band et la Slovak Radio Orchestra se partagent la tâche, l’un se chargeant des arrangements de standards de Gillespie, Fats Domino et Nat King Cole (entre autres), l’autre s’attaquant aux compositions originales. Pour un gars comme moi qui a peu d’intérêt pour les standards, les compos sont le centre d’intérêt de ce disque. Jaffe est solidement ancré dans la tradition du big band, mais ses compositions explorent des champs peu fréquentés, en particulier dans “Portaculture” et “Doxology”, des pièces audacieuses au niveau harmonique. Ça ne casse rien, mais c’est sympathique.

Released on a sublabel of Parma (the company behind Navona), this record features Andy Jaffe’s compositions and arrangements for big band. The Bill Lowe/Andy Jaffe Big Band carries the arrangements of standards by Gillespie, Fats Domino and Nat King Cole (among others), while the Sloval Radio Orchestra handles the original compositions. For a guy like me who has little fondness of straight-ahead jazz and standards, the interest here is definitely the originals. Jaffe clearly proceeds from the big band tradition, but his writing explores little-traveled regions, especially in “Portaculture” and “Doxology”, both quite bold harmonically speaking. An Imperfect Storm isn’t breaking new ground, but it’s enjoyable.
