Theodoros est
un cycle de douze compositions pour piano solo signées et interprétées par
Beata Hlavenková, que je ne connaissais pas. On la dit pianiste de jazz, mais
ces pièces, chacune correspondant à un mois de l’année, appartiennent plus à un
art de la musique instrumentale en général. D’ailleurs, elles évoquent plus
volontiers Debussy, voire Anthony Phillips, que l’univers jazz. Comme on peut
s’y attendre, certains mois sont mélancoliques, d’autres plus guillerets, et
l’ensemble coule de source. Accessible, agréable, réussi. Et mention spéciale
pour la pochette de ce CD, très belle, avec une série de photos de pièces de
piano, très élégant. Également paru sur vinyle chez Minority Records.
Theodoros is a
cycle of twelve pieces for solo piano composed and performed by Beata
Hlavenková, who I had not heard before. She is said to be a jazz pianist, but these
pieces, each one corresponding to a month of the year, pertain more to the art
of instrumental music in general. In fact, they more willingly evoke Debussy,
or even Anthony Phillips, than any jazz composer. As expected, certain “months”
are more prone to melancholy, while others are livelier, and the whole thing
runs effortlessly. Accessible, enjoyable, successful. And a special mention for
the CD packaging, gorgeous, with a series of photos of piano mechanical parts;
quite elegant. Also available on LP from Minority Records.
Mika Vainio vient de publier, sous son pseudo Ø, un
disque étonnant qui frôle le chef-d’œuvre. Konstellaatio
n’est ni foncièrement rythmique, ni résolument textural. En fait, il est
ambiant. Même que je n’ai jamais entendu Vainio en mode si ambiant. J’irai plus
loin: la pièce d’ouverture, “Otava”, doit beaucoup à Klaus Schulze. Étonnant? Oui.
Réussi? Tout à fait. Rythmes glitchs évanescents, mélodies aériennes,
arrangements souvent minimalistes, et l’ensemble dégage une chaleur inattendu

Mika Vainio just
released, under his alias Ø, a surprising record that turns out to be a
near-masterpiece. Konstellaatio is neither beat-driven nor downright textural. Actually, it’s an
ambient record – and I have not heard Vainio get this ambient before. I’ll
probably surprise you by stating that the opening track “Otava” owes a whole
damn LOT to Klaus Schulze. And it’s a fabulous track. For the rest: ghostly
glitchy rhythms, aerial melodies, often-minimalist arrangements, and the whole
thing is much warmer than expected, and unusually calm. An essential release of

Troisième album de Sum of R (si on compte le mini Ride Out the Waves), deuxième (selon la
même règle) avec la guitariste Julia Valentina Wolf aux côtés de Reto Mäder
(basse, électroniques, piano, batterie). Et ce disque marque un tournant vers
la chanson. Moins de textures, moins d’abstractions, plus de rock instrumental
lent, lourd et pesant, avec des similarités avec Sunn O))), Nadja, Locrian et
Godspeed You Black Emperor (particulièrement dans “Not Today and Maybe Not
Tomorrow But Soon and for the Rest of Your Life”). Un peu cliché par bouts,
mais ça gronde joliment.
Third album by
Sum of R (counting the EP Ride Out the Waves), their second (following the same rule) with guitarist Julia
Valentina Wold alongside Reto Mäder (bass, electronic, piano, drums). And this
record signals a new phase in the band’s sound. Less textures, less
abstractions, and more of that slow, heavy instrumental rock. Similarities with
Sunn O))), Nadja, Locrian, and Godspeed You Black Emperor (especially in “Not
Today and Maybe Not Tomorrow But Soon and for the Rest of Your Life”). A bit
cliché at times, but it rumbles on nicely.
