LUC FERRARI / Chantal (OHM Éditions)

À moins que je ne me gourre royalement, ce disque propose la même œuvre de 40 minutes que Tuchan Chantal publié par Room40 en format virtuel à l’été 2008. Il s’agit d’une œuvre réalisée en 1977, à la suite de vacances dans un petit village français (Tuchan) ou Luc Ferrari et sa conjointe ont fait la connaissance d’une villageoise (Chantal), jeune femme simple, mais à la tête forte et aux questionnements pertinents. L’œuvre adopte une forme hybride, entre le documentaire (séquences d’entrevues entrecoupées de pauses musicales) et l’art sonore (la confusion occasionnelle de Chantal répondant aux lignes tordues de guitare acoustique). Le tout a néanmoins une facture beaucoup plus audio-vérité que musique acousmatique. Une rencontre agréable, une écoute intéressante, différente. Mais rien de neuf ici, à part la belle présentation sobre d’OHM Éditions, incluant des textes supplémentaires d’ErikM, Jocelyn Robert, François Parra et Jérôme Roy.

Unless I really don’t know what I’m talking about, this CD features the same 40-minute piece as the Tuchan Chantal album released as download-only by Room40 in the summer of 2008. It is a work realized by Ferrari in 1977, after Ferrari and his wife spent their vacation in a small French town (Tuchan) where they met a country girl (Chantal), a young hard-headed woman with relevant interrogations about life and love. The work is in a hybrid form sitting between documentary (interview sequences interspersed with music breaks) and sound art (Chantal’s occasional confusion seems to be answered by the jagged acoustic guitar lines). However, as a whole, Chantal is much more closer to audio-verite than acousmatic music. An enjoyable meeting, an interesting listen, something definitely different. But this OHM Éditions CD offers nothing new, except a sleek sober design and extra texts by ErikM, Jocelyn Robert, François Parra, and Jérôme (all in French).

CAPTAIN MARRYAT / Captain Marryat (Shadoks Music - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

Originaire de Glasgow (Écosse), Captain Marryat a été actif dans les clubs locaux de 1971 à 1975, mais n’a laissé que cet album éponyme autoproduit en 1974 (maintenant réédité par Shadoks). La pochette est affreuse, mais la musique est sympathique: un rock proto-prog, fortement appuyé par l’orgue (plutôt bien joué mais de piètre qualité). Ça fait pensera aux débuts de Uriah Heap, à Beggars Opera, aux deux premiers Eloy aussi. De bonnes chansons où certaines idées sont trop étirées. En fait, ce qui manque à ce disque, ce sont de bons solos. Tout de même un effort intéressant pour l’époque.

From Glasgow (Scotland), Captain Marryat were active in local clubs in 1971-1975, and they only recorded this 1974 self-produced LP (now reissued by Shadoks). The cover jacket is terrible, but the music is fun. It’s proto-prog rock heavily relying on the organ (rather nicely played but cheap-sounding). It makes me think of early Uriah Heap, Beggars Opera, and the first two Eloy. Good songs, but some ideas get overstretched. Actually, what this album lacks is good solos. Still, a nice effort for the times.

THE THIRD EYE / Awakening... (Shadoks Music - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

La saga du rock psychédélique sud-africain se poursuit chez Shadoks. Cette étiquette réédite maintenant le catalogue de The Third Eye, à commencer par Awakening..., premier long-jeu du groupe paru en 1969. Il s’agit d’un disque de reprises (comme le premier Abstract Truth, d’ailleurs). Un psychédélique assez pesant (la norme en Afrique du Sud au tournant des années 70), plutôt inventif, souvent poignant. Leur version de “All Along the Watchtower” avec cuivres est saisissante. Et leur lecture de “Society’s Child” de Janis Ian possède une connotation raciale plus qu’évidente, en ces années où culminait l’apartheid (malheureusement, la voix de fausset du chanteur, dans les parties hautes, fait pitié à entendre). Un disque qui a du cran, avec beaucoup d’orgue enlevant et bien senti (plus que chez Captain Marryat).

Shadoks continues to plough the fields of South-African psychedelic rock. Up now is this reissue of The Third Eye’s debut LP Awakening... (1969). This is a covers album (like Abstract Truth’s debut). Rather heavy psych (it was quite a trend in South Africa at the turn of the ‘70s), rather creative, often poignant. Their version of “All Along the Watchtower” with brass section is striking. And their reading of Janis Ian’s “Society’s Child” takes on an even stronger and more ominous racial connotation, in these peaks years of the apartheid (sadly, the male singer’s falsetto in the high passages is downright terrible). This record has bite, and lots of uplifting organ (a lot better than on the Captain Marryat album).
