RICHARD CHARTIER / A Field for Mixing (Room40)
Comme d’habitude avec Richard Chartier, ce disque se déroule à la limite du seuil de perception. Deux longues pièces faites d’enregistrements de terrain dans des espaces petits et grands, ouverts ou fermés, mais tous vides, semble-t-il. J’avoue ne pas avoir accordé toute l’attention nécesaire à ce disque, et je promets de lui consacrer une écoute plus juste bientôt. Néanmoins, les ambiances creuses et les extrêmes subtilités de cet art sonore se marie étrangement bien avec les chants d’oiseaux et l’occasionnel bruit de moteur qui remplissent ma pièce de travail ce matin.
As usual with Richard Chartier, this album unfolds at the threshold of perception. Two long tracks made of field recordings in spaces large and small, open and closed, all empty it seems. I admit to not giving my undivided attention to this record, and I promise to give it a more thorough listen soon. Still, the hollow ambiances and extreme subtleties of this sound art blend it surprisingly well with the bird songs and occasional automotive sounds drifting through the open windows this morning.
HANNAH MARSHALL - NICOLA GUAZZALOCA - GIANNI MIMMO - LEILA ADU / The Shoreditch Concert (Amirani Records)
Une séance d’improvisation entre quatre musiciens qui me sont inconnus. Enregistrée dans une église. Belle synergie entre la violoncelliste Hannah Marshall et le pianiste Nicola Guazzaloca - l’un et l’autre sont habiles, sérieux et engageants. Le saxo soprano de Gianni Mimmo se mèle bien au tout. Quant à la chanteuse Leila Adu, je l’ai à peine remarquée... peut-être à tort. À réécouter.
A free improvisation session featuring four musicians I’m hearing for the first time. Recorded in a church. Nice synergy between cellist Hannah Marshall and pianist Nicola Guazzaloca - both are skillful, serious and engaging. Gianni Mimmo’s soprano sax blends in well. As for singer Leila Adu, I barely noticed her… Should relisten to make sure.
LOL COXHILL & ENZO ROCCO / Fine Tuning: The Gradisca Concert (Amirani Records)
Dans le panthéon des grands de la musique improvisée européenne, le saxo Lol Coxhill tient une place de choix. Et, malgré un âge plutôt vénérable, il continue de donner des concerts top niveau. En témoigne ce disque, un duo avec le guitariste italien Enzo Rocco enregistré en novembre 2008 devant public. Belles envolées, écoute solide, et Rocco est un guitariste fin avec une tendance à peine rock/fusion Très réussi. [Ci-dessous: Vidéo professionnelle du même concert. In the Pnatheon of European free improvisation, saxman Lol Coxhill sitts high. And, despite his rather venerable age, he still turns in top performances, as testified by this record, a duet with Italian guitarist Enzo Rocco recorded live in November 2008. Nice soaring lines, strong listening skills, and Rocco is a careful guitarist with a very slightly rock/fusion tendency. Well done. [Below: Professional video from the same concert. PAGO LIBRE SEXTETT / Platz Dada! (Christoph Merian Verlag)
Un projet audacieux, fou et très réussi: le quatuor de jazz actuel Pago Libre (dont j’ai récemment chroniqué le plus récent disque) s’acoquine le batteur Patrice Héral (aussi invité sur le dernier PL) et la chanteuse Agnes Heginger pour un programme entièrement consacré aux dadaïstes Hans Arp, Kurt Schwitters and Daniil Charms, dont les textes sont mis en musique par les membres de Pago Libre. Une belle ambiance cabaret dada, des musiques qui sortent de l’ordinaire de Pago Libre - plus folichones et tranchées, moins tendres et en demi-teintes. Malheureusement, la plupart des textes et toutes les notes de livret sont en allemand, mais il y a de quoi se divertir avec cran!
A bold, crazy, and successful project: longstanding new jazz quartet Pago Libre (whose latest CD I recently reviewed here) drafted in drummer Patrice Héral (also guesting on PL’s latest) and singer Agnes Heginger for a program devoted to Dadaists Hans Arp, Kurt Schwitters and Daniil Charms, whose texts are set to music by the members of Pago Libre. A fine Dada cabaret ambience, and tunes pulling the band out of their comfort zone - zanier and sharper than usual, less tender or half-hued. Sadly, most of the lyrics and all of the liner notes are in German, but it’s very entertaining a nice left-side addition to the band’s discography.
SIDSEL ENDRESEN, CHRISTIAN WALLUMRØD & HELGE STEN / Merriwinkle (Jazzland)
Paru en 2003, acheté au FIMAV après le concert du Trondheim Jazz Orchestra. Sidsel Endresen a une voix particulière, une voix d’alto, chaude, hantante. Un match parfait avec le pianiste Christian Wallumrød (piano préparé et électrique). S’ajoute au duo sur quelques pièces Helge Sten (ou Deathprod de Supersilent), pour un superbe mélange de mélodies hors de ce monde et de textures hors de ce corps. Je suis conquis d’emblée par ce disque que je recommande chaudement, peut-être même plus que l’album solo d’Endresen sous étiquette Sofa.
Released in 2003 - just bought it at FIMAV, after the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra’s performance. Sidsel Endresen has a peculiar voice, an alto’s voice, warm and haunting. A perfect match with pianist Christian Wallumrød (prepared and electric piano). On a few tracks, Helge Sten (aka Deathprod from Supersilent) steps in, for a splendid blend of otherworldly melodies and out-of-body textures. I am won over on first listen. Highly recommended, maybe even moreso than Endresen’s solo CD for Sofa.
