1982 / A/B (Hubro)
After a few records (including a gorgeous collaboration with BJ Cole), the atmospheric improvisation trio 1982 – Nils Økland, Sigbjørn Apeland, Øyvind Skarbø – presents something pretty different. The first half of A/B features a composite work: first, the trio recorded an 18-minute improvisation, then they entrusted Stian Omenås with the task of composing a wind quintet piece to lay over it. The result is striking, as you get the feeling that the chamber music is being built over the improvisation while the improvisers are deconstructing the chamber music. The rest of the record features five short trio improvisations, more typical of what you expect from 1982, and they are delightful.

BUILDING INSTRUMENT / Building Instrument (Hubro)
Wow, wow, WOW! Bravo. [Ci-dessous: “Historia”.]
Wow, wow, WOW! The debut album by a Norwegian trio founded six years ago. They’ve worked long and hard, and the result is irresistible. A blend of naive uplifting songs, delicate improvising, and sophisticated balance between acoustic and electronic, Building Instrument is ravishing from A to Z. The voice of Mari Kvien Brunvoll will haunt your most sensual dreams: in “Kanskje”, her presence is so immediate you’d think she’s right there with you. The soundworld and melodicism found on this album evoke Stein Urheim (with whom Brunvoll has worked in the past), Bjorn Olsson, and Skadedyr. The Hubro label just keeps on releasing low-key records of incredible beauty. Bravo! [Below: “Historia.”]

MOSKUS / Mestertyken (Hubro)
A second album for Norwegian creative jazz trio Moskus. Eleven short tracks that were developed while in the studio. The music is more relaxed and free-form than the material heard on Salmesykkel (tunes the band had been playing for a while). The piano/bass/drums trio has lost part of its bite in the process, but the results remain interesting – and get closer to an ECM-type of sound.

PINKDRAFT / 2010 (Creative Sources)
Recorded in August 2010, released in 2012, this record delivers a free improvisation session between Ricardo Jacinto (cello), Nuno Torres (alto sax), Nuno Morão (percussion, objects), and a certain Travassos on analog electronics. Improvisations made of abstracted sounds, close to the onkyo or eai soundworld. Some passages are convincing (especially in “The Missing Train”) but otherwise it lacks some cohesion. I find Travassos’s stripped-down, minimal, to-the-point interventions interesting.

ANDREW BIRD / Things Are Really Great Here, Sort Of... (Wegawam)
A new Andrew Bird, fresh out (June 3), but surprise: it’s vvvvvvvey country-sounding. Turns out it’s album of covers of songs by alt-country duo The Handsome Family (whom I knew nothing about prior). Okay, me and country music, we don’t really get along, but behind the simplicity of these songs I hear hallucinated lyrics, attentive arrangements, fine vocal harmonies, and – yes – some very melodious whistling. This will never become my favourite Andrew Bird record, but I’ll warm up to it more than I’d thought.

I had never heard Pierre de Grenoble, the album by the Yacoubs that set down, in 1973, the bases for what would become Malicorne. All in all, this is Malicorne 0. All the elements are already here: the voices, Hugues de Courson, the bagpipes, the traditional folk repertoire, the modern take (electric bass, folk-rock like arrangements). Arrangements are a bit thin and recording quality is not on par, and tempos sound neddlessly rushed, nervous. In other words, this is a blueprint, inferior to the first Malicorne (1974, the one now often called Colin), but it definitely points to what will be.

2014-06-04: WTTF, Bribes, Trio à lunettes, Moebius/Story/Leidecker

WTTF / Gateway ’97 (Creative Sources)
WTTF was a quartet consisting of young bassist Alexander Frangenheim and established players Phillipp Wachsmann (violin, electronics), Pat Thomas (piano, electronics), and Roger Turner (percussion). This is a studio session from 1997, but it only came out last year. Why so long? Don’t know, but this sure ain’t no bottom of the barrel material. It’s grade A free improvisation, rich in listening (the chemistry between the string players) and extended techniques, and more than a dash of irreverence and humour (Thomas’s electronics, especially). Eight 3-to-11-minute pieces, all consequential and tightly-packed. Recommended.

BRIBES / Bribes (Coax Records)
Be Coq hier, Coax et Tricollectif (ci-dessous) aujourd’hui.
Be Coq yesterday, now Coax and Tricollectif (below). Can you tell me why I get so much good stuff from the French young generation and so little (good or bad) stuff from Quebec? Hey, Quebecers, I don’t bite! (Or so seldomly.) Be Coq, Coax, and Tricollectif: follow those labels, they are releasing treasures of creativity. Bribes is a duo consisting of Romain Clerc-Renaud on keyboards and Geoffroy Gesser on tenor sax. 19 short pieces, vignettes, improvised but also composed (or preplanned at the very least). Elements of jazz punk and free rock, constructed bits, brutal bits. Creativity that holds you down for 54 minutes. Aggressive but stimulating.

Léo Jassef on piano (and he writes most of the material), Quentin Biardeau on saxophones, Théo Lanau at the drums. A creative jazz trio with various influences. The music range from Lacy-esque melodies to biting themes. Sophisticated writing, nice chemistry between the players, fine divesity of material in the course of these 40 minutes. It lacks a bit of character, but the foundation is strong.

MOEBIUS STORY LEIDECKER / Snowghost Pieces (Bureau B)
Yes, this is the kind of collaboration that will get you salivating. Dieter Mobius (of Cluster!), Tim Story, and Jon Leidecker (Wobbly). Beat-driven, laid-back music polluted by all sorts of sonic interventions – Wobbly, who has collaborated with the likes of Negativland and People Like Us, masters the art of the off-kilter intrusion, and it is his contribution that gives Snowghost Pieces its character. An enjoyable listen, though maybe a bit too comfortable and lulling in the final quarter. [Below: A montage of excerpts of the album.]

IVO PERELMAN
Just to keep things interesting, here is Perelman in a live concert from last year with three musicians we didn’t hear tonight: Daniel Levin, Jason Kao Hwang, and Juan pablo Carletti.
