A short record (under 30 minutes) of short improvisations for voie (Van Schouwburg) and piano (Charbin). Due to Van Schouwburg’s particular style of vocalizing, I’m immediately thinking of Phil Minton and Veryan Weston’s duo, although here there are no lyrics and a lot less whim (too bad, I like whim). What’s left is seven well-tailored, engaging improvisations that weave a subtle dialogue of multilayered meanings. But it’s too short, I want more!

MYSTIKOS QUINTET / Wup Bup (Jersey Blu Records - merci à/thanks to John Bourke P.R.)

I Can Give You Good Lovin’ Baby”, embarrassante).

My first contact with this American pair of keyboardists/turntablists/programmers, backed on this particular record by a bassist and a drummer. A good platter of chilly dub with very soulful buts, some funky ones, and even electro-jazz passages that remind me of a dubified take on Stade’s latest CD. Nothing groundbreaking, but the music’s elegant and it drives you to move without straining yourself. When it comes to club music, this is as far down the commercial path I’m willing to go. Nice work, accessible yet intelligent and never stooping to the lowest common denominator (except maybe on the embarrassing “I Can Give You Good Lovin’ Baby”).

PAK / Motel (Ra Sounds)

I really like this group led by Ron Anderson, it’s so powerful and unhinged! Like The Stickmen revisited by Palinckx! With Anderson (guitar), Jesse Krakow (bass) and Keith Abrams (drums), plus a few guests, including the ever-delectable Carla Kihlstedt. Complex pieces that fall between math rock and brutal prog, i.e. tunes that hit hard, but not in 4/4, play fast but don’t get lost, and stay close to the score without being ruled by it. Wow! [Below: A video edited by Ron Anderson from PAK’s Amsterdam ’08 concert, which featured new music that will be included on the new album, currently in progress.]

SPACEFLIGHT ORCHESTRA / An Orchestra Of One (Blackbridge Records - merci à/thanks to John Bourke P.R.)

Don’t look for Techno-related advice on this blog, you won’t find any. It’s not my style, literally. I’m quite fond of experimental electronica, ambient, dub, noise even, but the minute a beat starts thumping, I’m out. Which means that this album by Spacflight Orchestra is simply not my cup of tea – too techno, too dancefloor-friendly. It’s well done and, without being particularly inventive, at least intelligent, but I couldn’t listen all the way to the end.

THE RESIDENTS / Eskimo (Cryptic Corporation)

A friend had lent me this LP 15 years ago or so, and I hadn’t heard it again since, even though I have crossed paths with other Residents albums since. I just bought it and I relistened to it with renewed pleasure. It’s by far The Residents’ best record, between ambient, sound art, mystification, and farce. Rarely has The Residents’ art of obfuscation yielded such convincing results. And today, Eskimo remains a disconcerting listen. [The 2003 DVD reissue included a “visualization” of the album. Here’s an excerpt.]

ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE MELTING PARAISO U.F.O. / Magical Power from Mars (Important Records)

[The continuation of my Temple-esques adventures that started on July 27.] Released in 2003 (and the first of several AMT releases to appear on Important Records through the years), with a holographic cover. The first three tracks had been previously released as a series of three limited-edition Eps, here collected with a bonus fourth track. Though this belongs to a good AMT era, it’s a rather weak album: four long and monotonous pieces showing little changes, and the rhythm section is occasionally buried by the guitar and synths. Worth noting: “Cosmic Funky Dolly” features the band getting closer than ever to Klaus Schulze’s sound.

VANESSA ROSSETTO / Dogs in English Porcelain (Music Appreciation)

Dogs in English Porcelain is my first contact with the electroacoustician from Texas. I am completely under the spell of this long-form composition for electronics, field recordings, strings, and “acoustic turntable.” It’s aerial, intriguing, spacious yet constantly offering something new. A small chamber orchestra of textural sounds arranged in a sophisticated yet natural-feeling choreography. This lady sure knows what she is doing. This is released on CD-R, but don’t let that stop you: you need this record.

JOHN RUSSEL, JEAN DEMEY & JEAN-MICHEL VAN SCHOUWBURG / The Mercelis Concert - In Brussels 2006 (Inaudible)

Nice sessions between Brussels-based Jean-Michel Van Schouwburg (vocals) and Jean Demey (bass) and London-based acoustic guitarist John Russell. Three voice-guitar duets, one trio piece, and one bass solo. Sound quality is only fair, but this CD contains a number of good exchanges, especially in the first and third tracks. European free improvisation, demanding yet spirited and slightly mischievious – Van Schouwburg’s style of experimental vocalizations has a light, unpretentious side to it that can’t help bearing to mind the great Phil Minton.

THE INFUSION / Red Horse (Ra Sounds)

I had missed this CD upon its release in 2004. It was recorded right after The Infusion’s performance at FIMAV in 2003 and, as such, is more representative of what I heard at that show than their first CD released on 33trevpermi. The group’s take on improvisation is peculiar, heavy and loud, with an unusual instrumentation: acoustic guitar (Camel Zekri, whose style borrows strongly from Northern African music), electric bass (Olivier Paquotte, the thundering man from Etage 34), and Ron Anderson’s electric guitar (of PAK and The Molecules). World Free Rock.

And now, some preparation for tonight’s Delire Musical:

2e écoute/2nd listen: KARO / Sing Out, Heart! (Normoton)

I’m getting used to her bare-bones guitar style, and her lyrics are very pretty. A nice alt-folk record.

KLANG / Tea Music (Allos Documents - merci à/thanks to improvised communications)

Le calrinettiste James Falzone m’avait séduit en 2006 avec The Sign and the Thing Signified.

Oh, what a nice jazz record, possibly the best jazz CD I’ve heard this year. Clarinetist James Falzone had seduced me in 2006 with his The Sign and the Thing Signified. This album by his quartet Klang hits me right on the pleasure bone again. Falzone’s writing relies on past creatize jazz (Jimmy Giuffre is a disclosed inspiration for this particular record) and contemporary classical to form lyrical and gracious tunes – think of Michael Moore. And I realize that Falzone and I share a passion: tea! So it’s with a good cup of in-between-flush Darjeeling that I sipped in this CD also featuring Kason Adasiewicz on vibes (clarinet/vibes, what a nice combination), Jason Roebke on bass, and drummer Tim Daisy. Daisy and Roebke contribute a few compositions, but Falzone penned most of them. Softness, restraint, a little boldness – for this is still a modern jazz record, avant-jazz even in the way it builds bridges. Highly recommended.

TON TRIO / The Way (Singlespeed Music)

Aram Shelton had send me two CDs. This one makes a sharp contrast with Last Distractions (reviewed on 2009-08-14). Instead of that hyper-driven free session, here we have a set of (mostly) compositions featuring a more delicate and sophisticated trio. Shelton (alto sax and bass clarinet) is accompanied by Kurt Kotheimer (bass) and Sam Ospovat (drums). Good material with a well-rounded group sound, somewhere between The Vandermark 5 and Daniel Carter’s groups. The title track is excellent.

CHRIS / A Glimpse Inside (Musea)

I am wary of projects christed with only a first name, especially in prog rock. These are usuallu synonymous with egotistical endeavours. In fact, this debut album by “Chris” showed all the warning signs, as it is entirely (lyrics, music, performance, recording, artwork) the work of one Christiaan Bruin from The Netherlands. What? No outside look on the album, no window open on an outsider’s interpretation? Danger, my friends! And yet, I am pleasantly surprised. A Glimpse Inside is not a great album, but it could have been. Bruin doesn’t have a good voice (in fact, he has little voice at all) and he has an accent , but he writes good songs and produces them adequately. There’s as much Beach Boys as Pink Floyd in his style. The title track, “For All Who Care” and “Masquerade” are good songs that might have become irresistible with larger means, a good producer, and a singer who’d know how to carry the melodies. Actually, A Glimpse Inside makes an excellent demo. I wish someone would provide Bruin with the means to put together a group and rerecord the whole thing with more pezzaz.

NOVELLER / Red Rainbows (No Fun Productions)

Under this moniker hides Sarah Lipstate, a musician and filmmaker from Brooklyn. This is her first record. Red Rainbows is a set of drones made with electric guitar and an array of electronic effects. She manages to develop a certain beauty inside her long tracks, with a well-controlled gritty side that steps up at the right time. Nothing new, but no “I have something to prove” attitude either, which means that Noveller avoids extremes to focus on know-how and timing. Well done. The disc also includes a short film (sadly, I don’t have time to watch right now).

ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE MELTING PARAISO U.F.O. / Mantra of Love (alien8 recordings)

[The continuation of my Temple-esques adventures that started on July 27.] A very good AMT title released in 2004 on the Montreal-based label alien8 recordings. Two tracks. “La Le Lo” is a Paraiso-ified traditional occitan song. It’s nohing like AMT’s epic “La Novia” (occitan too) and its complex vocal harmonies. This one is simple and simply performed by Cotton Casino. “L’Ambition dans le miroir” is suite-type piece (well, almost, as it has no subtitles), a powerful cosmic journey. Not an unforgettable record, but a commendable one (and one of the very last few featuring Cotton).

LEVEL Π / Electronic Sheep (Dreaming/Musea)

De l’excellente électronique spatiale “old school”.

Second album for Level π or Uwe Cremer, a German revering ‘70s electronic music. He wears the influence of his heroes on his sleeve, which is usually something I find irritating. Except. Except that Cremer does what he does very well, with deep respect for his masters, and without falling into the pastiche pit. In “String Theorie,” he doesn’t poise as Klaus Schulze, he pays tribute to him. And the same goes for the tracks dedicated to Richard Barbieri, Jean-Michel Jarre, Cluster, Michael Rother, and Tangerine Dream. This is excellent “old school” electronic space music.

JOSH BERMAN, ARAM SHELTON & WEASEL WALTER / Last Distractions (Singlespeed Music)

A good album of driving, muscled free improvisation – not that Josh Berman (cornet) and Aram Shelton (soprano sax, some bass clarinet) aren’t capable of finesse, but with drummer Walter Weasel (of The Flying Luttenbachers) rounding up the trio, any attempt at finesse would be irrelevant. What a skin-hitter! A slightly long disc, but a spirited session evoking something like Peter Brötzmann’s Machine Gun seen through the prism of American free jazz.
