CHRISTOPHER CAMPBELL / Sound the All-Clear (Innova)

A beautiful album of delicate music somewhere between Harry Partch-influenced contemporary “classical” and David Toop-like sound art. Quiet textures of found sounds and instrumental inner-workings are interlaced with microtonal melodies played by either exotic traditional instruments or alien contraptions. “Imago” taps straight into Partch’s ethos - out-of-breath chords, tinkling percussives, haphazard melodies that make sense once you retune your ears. On first listen Sound the All-Clear probably sounds very odd - I’m well used to Partch’s soundworld, so I wasn’t that phased by it - but it is sure to be a grower, since its textures and discreet melodious character lull you in pretty easily.

NEWMAN TAYLOR BAKER / Drum • Suite • Life (Innova)

Dommage.

I love percussion. Unlike most people, I am not turned off by the idea of a solo drum kit album. Drum • Suite • Life delivers eight compositions for the drums, approached in various ways. Newman Taylor Baker, who has a long career behind him, intellectualizes a lot everything he does: each piece offers a selection of drums, sticks and techniques following a specific concept, homage or style. What we get as a result is meticulous tracks where the writing trumps virtuosity. Sadly, the music so produced is slightly cold and predictable. I was hoping that it would start careening, shouting, that it would try to aim for the plexus. But no, it stays at the intellectual level of structures and musical influences. Too bad.

ARTISTES VARIÉS-VARIOUS ARTISTS / The NYFA Collection: 25 Years of New York New Music (Innova)

I have finished listening to this five-CD set (partial review in the 2010-09-13 entry). I notice the last few discs have clear-cur themes: disc 3 focuses on percussion and jazzier music (Fred Ho, Iconoclast, John Lindberg); disc 4 is almost exclusively devoted to the voice, with works by Bora Yoon, Pauline Oliveros and Eve Beglarian (among others, of course); and disc 5 comes back to orchestral contemporary music, with five “Gymnopedies” by George Tsontakis, a piece by Neil Rolnick, and a Joan Tower among the highlights. Taken as a whole, the five discs (over six hours of music) brush a rather comprehensive landscape of “serious” New York contemporary music. But let it be known that most of the works included are already available elsewhere. Still, a strong compilation that will interest fans of contemporary music – and widen their horizons at the same time.

PLOTZ! / The Kid (SNP Records)

The Kid sera disponible dès demain.

The press release makes wild comparisons... that turn out to be accurate: Plotz! is the unlikely bastard son of Ivo Papason and Black Sabbath. Wait until you heard the loudness and heaviness in Jake Vossler’s electric guitar backing Plotz!’s Bulgarian-inspired tunes and you’ll get it. This is festive heavy Bulgarian jazz-rock, catchy as hell and quite accessible overall. I’m tempted to think of Ne Zhdali, but The Kid lacks an experimental/excessive dimension for that comparison to stick. A strong brass line (Daniel Rosenboom, Gavin Templeton, Brian Walsh and a thumping rhythm section (Vossler, Orest Balaban, Austin Wrinkle - together they evoke Sleepytime Gorilla Museum’s rhythm section). The Kid hits the physical and virtual racks tomorrow. [You can listen to the whole album on the band’s website (linked above).]

BYRON PETTY - ROBERT STEWART - PETER HOMANS / Tendrils (Navona Records)

A pretty record of contemporary classical music, not particularly experimental but nicely done. Robert Stewart (who died in 1995) was a teacher and mentor to both composers Byron Petty and Peter Homans, hence the decision to bring all three’s music together on Tendrils. “Idyll” (17 minutes) for string ensemble by Stewart is one of the disc’s highlights: a complex and engaging piece. By Homans I’ll remember “Three Italian Songs” (sung by mezzo-soprano Beverly Morgan). And by Petty, my picks are “Distractions” for flute and piano (Petty and Shuko Watanabe), and “A General Disturbance” for flute, cello and piano - two highly enjoyable pieces, lyrical yet filled with surprises.

HANS BAKKER / The Unnamed Source (Navona Records)

I’m less fond of this CD, entirely devoted to Hans Bakker, a Dutch composer who started seriously composing only past his 50th birthday. The Unnamed Source culls works for string orchestra and chamber music. Lots of beauty and breadth in the former, lots of quietness and candour in the latter, but it all lacks some originality to draw me in. That said, the “Cantus for string orchestra” (once more the Moravian Philharmonic conducted by Vit Micka) has echoes of Gorecki, and I did fall for that.

A splendid record of free improvisations between soprano saxophonist Pablo Ledesma and electric guitarist Enzo Rocco (who also released a duo with another soprano saxman, Lol Coxhill, on Amirani Records). Six tracks taken from two concerts. Lots of creativity, lyricism, and virtuosity. The 25-minute “Bellas Artes” does not feel long at all, and carried me unfailingly. I want to hear more from Mr. Rocco.

ARTISTES VARIÉS-VARIOUS ARTISTS / The NYFA Collection: 25 Years of New York New Music (Innova)

I’m not done listening to this five-CD set, but I want to write a word on it right now. It’s a fine set featuring works by artists who have received fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts over the past 25 years. A cornucopia of new music, with some major names and newcomers. I am particularly fond of the five separate booklets (instead of one big brochure). I have listened to the first two discs and my highlights so far have been the contributions by Annie Gosfield, Bruce Gremo (a beautiful piece for shakuhachi and electronics), Joel Chadabe (a piece for oversized theremin), Robert Dick, and Eric John Eigner (a piece for faucet, played on some very unique appartment piping). Lots of good thought-provoking music.

JON IRABAGON / Foxy (Hot Cup Records - merci à/thanks to Braithwate & Katz Communications)

The cover had me prepared for the worst – bikini girl on the beach, inflatable accessories), but it was a decoy to lure in cheesy jazz affiocionados. Despite the presence of a dozen tracks entitled “Foxy”, “Chicken Poxy”, “Biloxi” and the likes, Foxy consists of a single 78-minute free jazz improvisation, quite eventful, featuring tenor saxman Jon Irabagon, bassist Peter Brendler and drummer Barry Altschul. So bravo for the cover design, and bravo moreso for this slab of smoking jazz – and rest assured there’s nothing fake or cheesy about it.

VARIABLE DENSITY SOUND ORCHESTRA / Sound Particle 47 (Creative Nation Music - merci à/thanks to Improvised Communications)

A good second opus for guitarist Garrison Fewell’s Variable Density Sound Orchestra, a nine-piece ensemble playing structured improvisations and avant-jazz compositions. Four winds (among them Roy Campbell Jr. and Steve Swell), four string instrumentalists (including Fewell and Eric Hofbauer on guitars), and a drummer. Good band balance, nice themes (not all Fewell’s; Hofbauer, Campbell and Swell contribute; John Tchicai too), fine production. Not remarkable, although I intend to listen again - Sound Particle 47 could become addictive.

2010-09-10: Senking, Philip Jeck, Janina Angel Bath

Journal d'écoute / Listening Diary

2010-09-10

SENKING / Pong (Raster-Noton - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

Hmm...

Hmm... This record is surprisingly accessible for a release on Raster-Noton. Senking offers a slow, stretched-out, deep take on dubstep, rather subtle and nuanced. A spaced out version of Byetone? It’s easy to see there’s a rather serious research in timbres and structures here, but it works in the shadows, and the music (since this IS music) remains rather organic. Lots of rathers in there, right? That’s because nothing’s black or white here - neither the record nor my opinion of it.

PHILIP JECK / An Ark for the Listener (Touch - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

Philip Jeck’s sixth solo album for Touch, and a very nice vintage. Nothing has changed in Jeck’s approach - he still plays old turntables and records like they were instruments, with a highly textural, ambient approach, poetry of juxtapositions of images, sounds, and moods. This album was constructed in the studio from live recordings. Each track is independent, but they form a cohesive whole that delivers more substance and variety than his previous release Sand.

JANINA ANGEL BATH / Gipsy Woman - LP version (Prophase Music)

I reviewed this album earlier this year, but here it is again, this time on vinyl - and Prophase Music makes some fabulous vinyl releases - 2-toned, heavy-weight, with sturdy gatefold sleeves. The vinyl edition of Gipsy Woman offers a whole different running order while sticking exactly to the selections found on the CD - nothing subtracted, no bonus tracks. First is the main LP, brought down to six tracks - five songs and one instrumental. However, hiding inside the sleeve is a 10” EP (and I mean “hiding” - it’s tucked in the closed side of the gatefold - I had to reach inside to bring it out) featuring the album’s other instrumental tracks, plus the closing song. The instrumentals acted as interludes on the CD so, brought together like that, they loose some of their appeal. However, Bath’s hippified folk is perfectly suited to the vinyl format, and the mastering is impeccable. In the end, I appreciate this album more in this edition.
