2009-09-18: Berger Rond, Piccadilly Sunshine, Thai Pop Spectacular 2

Journal d'écoute/Listening Diary

2009-09-18

BERGER ROND / Audiomachie/Logomachie (Berger Rond)

Hé toi! Oui, toi!

Hey, you! Yes, you there! Are you always on the lookout for music that’s more experimental, weirder, and more disarming than ever? Here, meet Vincent Bergeron, a guy from Victoriaville, Quebec. Nah, it’s my pleasure, really! – For several years now, the music of Vincent Bergeron (who seems to have dropped his real name in favor of the Berger Rond alias) has been the most disconcerting I know. Each piece by him is an incredibly destabilizing construction of notes, chords, and lyrics that somehow should fit together – and most probably do, in the fifth or sixth dimension, the problem being that our ears only perceive three. Audiomachie/Logomachie picks up where Le Savant devait arriver avant songeur had left: key role for singer Viveka Eriksson, a predominance of strings, melodies even more deconstructed than before, music even more monolithically hermetic than before. So what am I to do with such a UFO? Listen to it, again and again. For either Bergeron is a total madman or he’s a genius hearing music in more dimensions than most of us can. Either way, it’s worthy digging into…and worth a certain amount of admiration. [Below: “Bruissement de griserie”, a track from the album. You’ll find more samples here.]

ARTISTES VARIÉS-VARIOUS ARTISTS / Piccadilly Sunshine, Part One (Past & Present - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

It’s all in the subtitle: “British Pop Psych and Other Flavours 1965-1970.” Mostly psychedelic pop, actually, with an emphasis on pop. Lots of Beatles soundalikes and derivative songs. A nice selection, though hardly essential.

ARTISTES VARIÉS-VARIOUS ARTISTS / Siamese Soul: Thai Pop Spectacular, Vol. 2 (1960s-1980s) (Sublime Frequencies - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

Second Sublime Frequencies compilation devoted to Thai pop, that strange hybrid of South-Eastern traditions and Western influences. Microtonal singing full of flexible, graceful, occasionally acrobatic inflections; driving beats, mouth organs blending in with electric guitars; and so much joy and carefree spirit. Lots of quality too (a lot more, in fact, than in the Thai Beat a Go-Go series, which had opted for the ridicule aspect of Thai pop, with its Elvis wannabes and other Western bastardized pastiches). First-rate otherworldliness, and a repertoire that’s totally unknown outside of South-East Asia.

2009-09-17: Fonda/Stevens Group, Werchowska/Pontevia/Boubaker, Jason Stein

Journal d'écoute / Listening Diary

2009-09-17

Again, I spent all morning listening to projects for the next FIMAV festival… but I can’t write about, as you can understand...

Puis...

And then…

THE FONDA/STEVENS GROUP / Memphis (Playscape Recordings - merci à/thanks to Improvised Communications)

It’s strange. Ask me to recommend a few modern jazz groups, and I’ll never think of the Fonda/Stevens Group. However, every time a new CD of theirs comes through the door, I’m thrilled. The fact is, I really like their velvety avant-jazz, for two main reasons: bassist Joe Fonda and trumpeter Herb Robertson. Incidentally, I prefer Fonda’s driving compositions to Michael Jefry Stevens’ sedated ones. This new opus, their 11th, was recorded in the studio (a rare feat for them). Better sound, material in their strong average, a thoroughly enjoyable listen.

NUSH WERCHOWSKA, MATHIAS PONTEVIA & HEDDY BOUBAKER / Glotosifres (Creative Sources)

A short record (29 minutes) that passed me by upon its release in the mid-2000s. Two musicians I didn’t know (Nush Werchowska, piano, and Mathias Pontevia, drums), and another I know little about (sax player Heddy Boubaker). Glotosifres culls two free improvisation sessions from 2004. It’s sophisticated music, dense with getting noisy, reduced with being reductive. A honest session where the musicians are searching more than finding (and that’s better than having found before starting), and where the feeling of wonder stemming from that search is successfully communicated to the listener.

JASON STEIN / In Exchange for a Process (Leo Records)

Jason Stein is a clarinet player from Chicago, very active in various jazz and improv groups, but I think this is the first time I hear him (unless as part of Kyle Bruckmann’s Wreck?). Still, here comes a CD of bass clarinet solos that threw me down. What a soloist! Marvelous work with harmonics, some furious passages, but most of all a take on the solo that is neither a catalog of techniques or a demonstration of virtuosity. The result: a captivating record that left me in awe. [Below: Find three excerpts of the album on this page.]

MC Maguire: Trash of Civilization

I spent all morning listening to projects for the next FIMAV festival… but I can’t write about, as you can understand...

Puis...

And then…

MAD’MOIZÈLE GIRAF / Peindre la Giraf (High Life Music)

Some intelligent, carefree Quebecois raggamuffin. Very accessible music (they even have a hit on Quebec radios these days), but very well done. The dub component is well executed, the rhymes are often funny and sharp-edged – you gotta hear how they depict my hometown Sherbrooke in a handful of verses in “Rime Rurale”! A pretentiousless album, a bit lyric-intensive (the MCs won’t shut up!), but a lot of fun. Fans of ragga, dub, and reggae will dig.

VILLALOG / Cosmic Sister (Angelica Köhlermann - merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)

Cosmic Sister falls squarely halfway between disco and krautrock. And no, it doesn’t sound like Kraftwerk. Actually, if it weren’t for the opening track “Cosmic Sister Disco” and its horrible vocoder vocal track (yeeesh!), I’d be mostly thinking about Cluster, Harmonia, or even Neu! That track aside, Villalog (a quartet) delivers an enjoyable platter. It’s dance music all right, but there’s meat around that bone. There are similarities with Zombie Zombie (minus the horror flick schtick). “Vive le Deep” and “Space Rave” are good driving tunes. It makes good background music too. Produced by Bernhard Fleischmann. [You can listen to three tracks on the band’s MySpace (the first three tracks in the player).]

SLOWCREAM / And (Nonine - merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)

I just swallowed back my own words. Earlier this year, I put down a solo record by ME Raabenstein, questioning why he was so esteemed on the Berlin scene. And here comes this gorgeous third album by his prokect Slowcream. It’s music for a choreography (it”s obvious just listening to it), heavily orchestrated – using samples, mostly – graceful, vivid, engulfing. I’m thinking of Robert Lippok’s Open Close Open, Olafus Arnalds, even Tibor Szemzó. The barrier between ambient electronica and post-classical music is definitely crumbling down.

JB FLOYD, THOMAS BUCKNER & GEORGE MARSH / In Crossing the Busy Street (Mutable Music)

This CD by composer/pianist JB Floyd is twofold. First, a cycle of eight songs, 22 minutes, performed by baritone Tom Buckner and Floyd at the piano, based on poems by Daniel Abdal-Hayy Moore. Elegant, beautiful, rapturing, and imbued with that slightly austere grace I have come to associate with Buckner. Then follows a string of improvisations around the musical themes of the suite, 38 minutes in all, featuring Floyd and drummer George Marsh. Gone is the “lieder” feel of the first part, replaced by a slightly amorphous, complacent form of jazz. Had Buckner participated to that part (he’s a talented improviser), it may have been less bland and predictable.

There are two aspects to this record I should discuss. First, the music: doublebass solos recorded in studio and in nature. Viltard masters a good range of extended techniques that allow him to explore the whole range of the instrument’s sonic possibilities (some of which sounded new to my ears). His music is not particularly moving, but it stimulates the mind. Now, the object: Running Away is the first release on Un Rêve Nu, a label involved in art editions. The CD is packaged between two slabs of stratified wood, 19x14 cm, smooth on the inside faces where the cover and notes are printed, rough on the outside faces, which have been hand-painted. The pieces of wood are held together by four magnets. A unique design, marvelously executed. [Below: You can download the whole album for free in FLAC format. There is also a few photos of the object at this link.]

This would be the best fusion jazz record of 2009, except that it’s not quite fusion jazz. Then again, that’s what makes it the best fusion jazz record of 2009! Lost? Let’s say that Manifest Density is the missing link between fusion jazz and RIO... At least, that’s the best image I can find. Intelligently written, brilliantly executed, with gusto and just enough good sense.

2e écoute/2nd listen: ARTISTES VARIÉS-VARIOUS ARTISTS / The Electric Asylum, Volume 3 (Past & Present - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

Preparing for tonight’s Delire Musical. This is a good comp, somewhat lighter than Volume 1, though driven by a nice streak of madness. Not that rock though. Read a more detailed comment at my diary entry from 2009-09-08.

2e écoute/2nd listen: FLAMING TUNES / Flaming Tunes (Life and Living Records - merci à/thanks to ReR Megacorp)

Un “labour of love”.

Wonderful. An album as beautiful and fragile as the arts&crafts work of a young child, delicate as the wings of a butterfly. A true labour of love. If you want to know what I’m talking about, go back to my diary entry from 2009-09-07.

POSITIVE CATASTROPHE / Garabatos Volume One (Cuneiform)

Finally acquired this CD, an ambitious project that won’t let you down! This is a collaboration between cornet player Taylor Ho Bynum (Anthony Braxton’s protege) and alterno-latino percussionist Abraham Gomez-Delgado (of Zemog and Gallo Bueno). A fun tentet, some great avant-big band. Two pieces are dedicated to Sun and Fred Ho, which sums up pretty well the style and mood of these recordings. Okay, I’m ready for Volume 2!

2009-09-14: Krusche & Krusche, Demdike Stare

Journal d'écoute/Listening Diary

2009-09-14

KATJA KRUSCHE & MARTIN V. KRUSCHE / I Am One: Stories from the Worlds In-Between (Leo Records)

A nice Austrian (?) duo consisting of a vocalist (Katja) and an accordion player (Martin). It’s an unusual instrumentation for free improvisation, and if approached through extended techniques, it can offer interesting similitudes between the human voice and the breath of the accordion. That’s something the duo taps into rather well. Katja has an alto range, with strong Central European accents – she reminds me of Irena Budweiserova when singing. When improvising wordless vocals, she gets close to both Evelyn Petrova and Lauren Newton (though without the virtuoso range of the latter). Sensitive, even touching improvisations, although the album as a whole is not that compelling.

DEMDIKE STARE / Symbiosis (Modern Love - merci à/thanks to: Forced Exposure)

Somewhere between experimental techno and ambient electronica, between hijacked dub and trippy sound collage. Demdike Stare (Miles Wittaker and Sean Canty) are making stripped-down electronica with a cannibalistic inclination, as they borrow from Turkish, Iranian, African, and Indian cultures a beat here, a rhythm there, and lots of moods, which they reset by stripping them bare and darkening them. Cold music reminiscent of Pan Sonic, though quite unique.
