THE LEE SHAW TRIO / Live at Art Gallery Reutlingen (Artists Recording Collective)

Lee Shaw est une pianiste octogénaire qui a enseigné à John Medeski. Elle publie ce mois-ci deux disques. Le premier, avec son trio (le bassiste Rich Syracuse et le batteur Jeff Siegel), est enregistré en Allemagne, avec deux saxophonistes invités: Johannes Enders et Michael Lutzeier. Le répertoire consiste principalement en standards (tout de même, un Ornette Coleman s’y glisse) et le mode est très bop. Bien, mais pas remarquable.

Lee Shaw, a jazz pianist now in her eighties, taught to John Medeski way back when. This month she is releasing two CDs. The first one features her trio (bassist Rich Syracyse and drummer Jeff Siegel) and was recorded live in Germany with two guest saxophonists: Johannes Enders and Michael Lutzeier. The repertoire consists mostly of standards (with an Ornette Coleman tune thrown in) and the style is resolutely bop. Nice, not remarkable.

JOHN MEDESKI & LEE SHAW / Together Again: Live at the Egg (Artists Recording Collective)

Des retrouvailles entre Lee Shaw et son ancien élève John Medeski. Nettement plus intéressant que Live at Art Gallery Reutlingen: plus vivant, plus audacieux aussi. Deux pièces de Medeski (“Wiggly’s Way” et “Where’s Sly?”) plus un solo, quatre compositions de Shaw et une improvisation collective. Un jazz créatif très agréable, pas compliqué mais pas guindé non plus. Un beau moment.

The reconvening of the teacher and her student. A lot more interesting than Live at Art Gallery Reutlingen: livelier and bolder. Two Medeski numbers (“Wiggly’s Way” and “Where’s Sly?”) plus a solo, four Shaw compositions, and one collective improvisation. Very nice creative jazz, uncomplicated and groovy. A fine moment.

 INVISIBLE OPERA COMPANY OF TIBET / UFO Planante (Voiceprint Brazil)

Le projet space rock de Fabio Golfetti (Violeta de Outono) vient de publier un excellent disque chez Voiceprint Brazil. UFO Planante délaisse le corpus de Gong pour se concentrer sur des pièces originales. Beaucoup de matériel solide, de la multipartite “First Contact” au space rock pur et simple de “Stars.” En bonus, une reprise de “Moon in June” de Soft Machine qui est... agréable et correcte (c’est s’attaquer à un gros morceau, légendaire; il est ici respecté, peut-être de trop près). Chaudement recommandé pour le matériel original.  [Ci-dessous: Une présentation vidéo de l’album.]

The space rock project of Fabio Golfetti (Violeta de Outono) just released an excellent CD on Voiceprint Brazil. UFO Planante leaves behind Gong’s repertoire in favor of original compositions. Lots of strong material, from the suite-like “First Contact” to the straightforward space rocker “Stars.” As a bonus track, a cover of Soft Machine’s “Moon in June”, which is… enjoyable and okay (it’s a legendary track, here duly respected - a little too respected perhaps). PEOPLE LIKE US & ERGO PHIZMIZ / Rhapsody in Glue (Plurgo)

Puisque People Like Us et Ergo Phizmiz figuraient tous deux au Top 50 des musiques éclectiques 2010 de mon émission Délire Musical, il me fallait investiguer cette collaboration de 2009, disponible en téléchargement gratuit en plus. Rhapsody in Glue est aguichant mélange de chansons naïves et de mash-ups, les textes de Phizmiz se superposant aux bandes sonores claudiquantes - Bizet et Mammoud Ahmed font particulièrement bon ménage! BEAUCOUP de plaisir à avoir avec ce disque, d’autant plus qu’il est gratuit.  [Ci-dessous: La pièce d’ouverture, “Snow Day”, suivie du lien pour télécharger l’album.]

Since People Like Us and Ergo Phizmiz charted separately in my radio show Délire Musical’s 2010 Eclectic Music Top 50, I just had to investigate this freely available collaborastion from 2009. Rhapsody in Glue is a catchy blend of naive songs and mash-ups. Phizmiz’s lyrics are overlaid on limping soundtracks - Bizet and Mammoud Ahmed are an unexpectedly fine match!
