ALBERT LANDOLT / The Outernational Three (Unit Records)

Un bon disque de jazz actuel. The Outernational Three est un trio dirigé par le saxophoniste-flûtiste Albert Landolt, qui signe la plupart des pièces présentées ici. Il est accompagné d’une section rythmique souple et mobile: le batteur Bill Elgart et le contrebassiste Furio di Castri. Les pièces de Landolt sont amusantes et pleines de vie. “Neue Mollbluesgeschichte”, qui ouvre l’album, a un côté faux-blues sublime, on dirait Rahsaan Roland Kirk en mode coqun. “Ana Toll” offre aussi un thème folichon qui me plaît beaucoup. Même les moments plus tendres sont bien dosés et non exempts d’humour. Du jazz moderne bien fait, sans complaisance, et avec vivacité.

A good modern jazz record. The Outernational Three is a trio led by sax/flute player Albert Landolt, who also writes most of the band’s material. He is backed by a supple and mobile rhythm section consisting of drummer Bill Elgart and bassist Furio di Castri. Landolt’s tunes are fun and lively. “Neue Mollbluesgeschichte”, the album opener, has a great faux-blues feel, almos like Rahsaan Roland Kirk in quirky mode. “Ana Toll” is another whimsical theme I found very likeable. Even the softer moments are well-balanced and not devoid of humor. Well done modern jazz, non-complacent, vivacious.

MITCH & IGOR KRUTOGOLOV & MITCH / Love for Three Cockroaches (Auris Media)

Superbe! Merveilleux! Ridicule! Sérieusement! Love for Three Cockroaches est en fait la rencontre entre le splendide gorupe klezmer-punk israélien Kruzenshtern i Parohod et un groupe que je ne connaissais pas, Mitch & Mitch. Cet ensemble interprète ici les compositions de Zelig Rabitchnyak, un compositeur israélien du début du 20e siècle qui, émigré au Nouveau-Mexique, rêvait de combiner klezmer et bluegrass. C’est, du moins, ce que raconte le livret. Ce disque serait une interprétation très personnelle d’un opéra de Rabitchnyak. Que cela soit vrai ou non, ça fait une lecture intéressante et ça sonne de toute manière comme du Kruzenshtern i Parohod, en plus fou! Tout au long du disque, Igor Krutogolov (de KiP) chante des airs sans parole de sa voix gutturale et digne d’un dessin animé (pas métal, plus comme un artiste de cabaret comme Friendly Rich). L’instrumentation qui l’entoure est touffue: quantité de claviers et de guitares, mais aussi cuivres, clarinette, vibraphone, et la batterie de Rev. James Boned Mitch (un des nombreux “Mitch” listés). La musique fait fortement penser à Mr. Bungle, à Ping aussi, avec une forte dimension avant-cabaret et un élément klezmer très fort. De l’avant-prog/avant-rock/RIO comique complètement déjanté, mais entraînant et éminemment contagieux. Un must! [Ci-dessous: Un extrait de l’album en concert.]

Splendid! Marvelous! Ridiculous! Seriously! Love for Three Cockroaches is actually a collaboration between stupendous Israeli klezmer-punk group Kruzenshtern i Parohod and Mitch & Mitch, an outfit I knew nothing about. This band here performs the compositions of one Zelig Rabitchnyak, an early 20th-century Israeli composed expatriated to New Mexico, where he dreamt of blending klezmer with bluegrass. At least, that’s the story the liner notes tell. So this CD would be a highly personal interpretation of an opera by Rabitchnyak. May that be true or not, it makes a fun read and it sounds like genuine Kruzenshtern i Parohod... squared! Throughout the album, KiP’s Igor Krutogolov sings wordless melodies in a cartoonish grunt (not metal-derived, more in an avant-cabaret style, ike Friendly Rich). The instrumentation around him is dense: lots of keys and guitars, horns, clarinet, vibes, and drums by one Rev. James Boned Mitch (one of many “Mitches” credited). The music is strongly reminiscent of Mr. Bungle and Ping, with a strong avant-cabaret facet and solid klezmer roots. Off-the-wall avant-prog/avant-rock/comedy-RIO, extremely entertaining and infectious. I love it! A must! [Below: A track from the album performed live.]

ARTISTES VARIÉS-VARIOUS ARTISTS / Rökstenen: A Tribute to Swedish Progressive Rock of the 70’s (Musea)

Oui, un autre projet Colossus et Musea. Celui-ci, un coffret de 3 disques, fait suite aux deux volumes de Tuonen Tytär consacrée au rock progressif finlandais. Personnellement, je préfère le corpus suédois et j’ai sérieusement pris mon pied avec ce coffret qui totalise près de quatre heures de musique. Trente-huit artistes de toute la planète prog réinterprètent à leur façon des pièces plus ou moins connues des grands groupes du prog suédois des années 70. Les version intéressantes abondent, les découvertes aussi. Parmi les artistes “refaits”, on compte Blakulla (trois chansons), Kaipa (quatre), Atlas, Bo Hansson, Trettioariga Kriget, Ragnarok, Dice, Flasket Brinner, Algarnas Tradgard (grosse surprise, ça) et les Samla Mammas Manna. Parmi les “refaiseurs”, plusieurs noms hors des alignements habituels des projets Colossus/Musea. À souligner particulièrement: le Blakulla de Jinetes Negros, le Made in Sweden de Beardfish (puissant), le Dice de Karmic Juggernaut, l’Atlas de Vanilla Project (complexe et torché), le Life de Pseudosun et le Pugh Rogenfeldt du Divine Baze Orchestra.

Yep, another Colossus/Musea project. This one is a 3-CD set following up on the two volumes of Tuonen Tytär devoted to Finnish prog rock. I personally prefer the Swedish repertoire, and I thoroughly enjoyed this set, which totals nearly 4 hours of music. 38 artists from all over the progosphere covering in their own way more and less known tracks by the major Swedish prog groups of the ‘70s. Interesting covers about, discoveries too. Among the covered artists are Blakulla (three songs), Kaipa (four), Atlas, Bo Hansson, Trettioariga Kriget, Ragnarok, Dice, Flasket Brinner, Algarnas Tradgard (that one was a surprise) and Samla Mammas Manna. Among the “coverers”, lors of names falling outside the usual Colossus/Musea line-ups. Worth a special mention: Jinetes Negro’s Blakulla, Beardfish’s Made in Sweden (powerful), Karmic Juggernaut’s Dice, Vanilla Project’s Atlas (complex and ballsy), Pseudosun’s Life, and Divine Baze Orchestra’s Pugh Rogenfeldt.
