MIKKO INNANEN & INNKVISITIO / Clustrophy (TUM Records - merci à/thanks to Braithwaite & Katz)
The American jazz relationists Braithwaite & Katz invited me to discover a jazz label from Finland, TUM Records. Today I’ll be listening to four of their releases. And this Clustrophy kicked things off very nicely. It’s a quintet led by saxman Mikko Innanen, with two more saxophonists, a keyboardist and a drummer. Keyboardist Sepo Kantonen breathes a lot of fire in this horn-heavy band (his distorted electric piano is a lot of fun to follow). Feverish compositions reminiscent of Chicago avant-jazz, with elements borrowed from Fusion. Strong stuff.

FAB TRIO / History of Jazz in Reverse (TUM Records - merci à/thanks to Braithwaite & Katz)
By the way, TUM’s productions are gorgeous physical objects (splendidly-designed digipaks with booklets full of notes and lavish photographs). It’s particularly appreciated for this gem of a record: an ultimate studio album by the FAB Trio recorded in 2005, before violinist Billy Bang passed away. Bang sounds in great shape here. This trio (also including Joe Fonda and Barry Altschul) has done great free jazz things, but this album might become my favorite. For the exchanges in “Implications,” the beautiful spontaneous melody spun by Bang in “Chan Chan,” and the intelligence shining throughout “History of Jazz in Reverse.”

ANDREW CYRILLE & HAITIAN FASCINATION / Route de frères (TUM Records - merci à/thanks to Braithwaite & Katz)
A very nice project by US drummer Andrew Cyrille, here renewing with his Haitian roots. For this band, he enlisted two musicians from the island: percussionist Frisner Augustin and acoustic guitarist Alix Pascal, plus two New-Yorkers: baritone saxman Hamiet Bluiett and doublebassist Lisle Atkinson. Everybody contributes to the repertoire. The resulting music is often sunny and swinging, and consistently creative, even when tackling traditional tunes.  [Below: You’ll find an audio clip on this page.]

OLAVI TRIO & FRIENDS / Triologia (TUM Records - merci à/thanks to Braithwaite & Katz)
In the light of the previous three records, this one sounds to me more predictable and less interesting, in an improvised jazz form that stands out less. The three members of this trio share the same second name (Olavi). They are a trombonist, a bassist, and a percussionist. Trumpet, tenor sax, and electric guitar make two appearances each in the course of 14 tracks. Slightly more festive than what you’d expect from a Scandinavian avant-jazz group, but I’m nonplussed.

BEIRUT / The Rip Tide (Pompeii Records)
Another artistic success for Zack Condon who, if he doesn’t push his soundworld into new territories, still delivers fresh-sounding songs. This short record (33 minutes) satisfies the fan of fair-inflected alt. folk song – the improbable meeting of Alasdair Roberts and Tom Waits, perhaps? “Payne’s Bay” and “Santa Fe” are particularly fine examples of his highly personal songwriting, but it’s almost all good (only “Goshen” disappoints).
