SAINT DIRT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL / Abandoned Ballroom (Barnyard Records)
L’ouverture “As America Crumbles, I Sit in My Room Dreaming Up Silly Songs” a un côté Klimperei indubitable (le glockenspiel), alors que les rythmes latino de “Zombies Love Dancin’ to this Number” évoquent Jono el Grande forniquant avec Perrey & Kingsley. [Ci-dessous: Deux minutes de “Zombies Love Dancin’ to this Number”.]
A second opus for Saint Dirt Elementary School, an ensemble led by lap-steel player Myk Freedman. And this one’s a big step forward, a truly beautiful record of short naive pieces, so pretty they’ll make you smile in harmony. The opening tune “As America Crumbles, I Sit in My Room Dreaming Up Silly Songs” has an unavoidable Klimperei feel (the glockenspiel), while the Latin rhythms in “Zombies Love Dancin’ to this Number” bring to mind Jono el Grande shacking up with Perrey & Kingsley. Elsewhere, the music displays strong affinities with Fanfare Pourpour, Pascals and Swedish duo Sagor & Swing. Candy for the ear, instantly endearing.  [Below: Two minutes from “Zombies Love Dancin’ to this Number.”]

THE ELEMENT CHOIR & WILLIAM PARKER / At Christ Church Deer Park (Barnyard Records)
Commencez par At Rosedale United.
At a CD launch event organized by Barnyard Records, were simultaneously on stage at some point the Lewis/Downing/Martin trio, William Parker, and Christine Duncan’s Element Choir. The result: 45 minutes of happiness to follow up on the large vocal improvisation ensemble’s debut. Less grand and revelatory than their first CD, but still a very honest effort. The first 20 minutes are gorgeous – nice synergy between pipe organ, choir and instrumentalists. But the piece looses its way afterward. Start with At Rosedale United.

SLIVOVITZ / Bani Ahead (Moonjune)
[Ci-dessous: Cette page propose plusieurs extraits.]
Second album on Moonjune by this Italian band (how come I missed their debut Hubris?). Instrumental prog rock mixed with rock-in-opposition elements. Complex with a healthy dose of humour, dynamic, resting on assured songwriting. “02-09” and the title track stand out, the first one for its energy, the second for its offroad trip. Heartily recommended!  [Below: Find several audio clips on this page.]

AGENTS OF MERCY / The Black Forest (Foxtrot Music)
Bravo.
It’s now official: the collaboration betwee Nad Sylvan and Roine Stolt now has precedence over The Flower Kings. The Black Forest, Agents of Mercy’s third album, was mostly composed by Stolt and adopts the form of a concept album, a 60-minute suite of eight self-standing songs. This is great progressive rock, truly, and better than the last two or three Flower Kings records – at least more distinctive, with thoroughly thought-out arrangements. Bravo.
