PIERRE-YVES MARTEL, MARTIN TÉTREAULT & PHILIPPE LAUZIER / La formule x y z (&records)
Philippe Lauzier and Pierre-Yves Martel, Montreal’s new free improvisation tag team. They seem to be everywhere these days, and that’s great: they’re excellent. This time, they apply their their approach to electroacoustic improvisation (close-miked sax and feedback for Lauzier; feedback and static for Martel) to the soundworld of turntablist Martin Tétreault. Tracks are in the five-minute range and explore gritty, acidic textures that will delicately gnaw at your eardrums. Lots of invention deployed using minimal means in unorthodox ways. Worth comparing to the Palétuvier project, the Denley/Lauzier/Martel/Myhr/Normand quartet and the splendid Lauzier/Martel duo Sainct Laurens released on &records.

CHRISTIAN FENNESZ, DAVID DANIELL & TONY BUCK / Knoxville (Thrill Jockey)
A record doesn’t have to be long to be perfect. Thirty minutes of perfection is just fine by me, and this is such a case. Knoxville (from the city where this concert was recorded) documents the premiere collaboration between famous electronician Christian Fennesz, experimental folk guitarist David Daniell (think in the lines of Loren Connors), and drummer Tony Buck (The Necks). One continuous set split into four parts, with Fennesz’s typical experimental melody-laced textures, floating chords of distorted guitar, and a development arc strongly reminiscent of The Necks. This music grabs hold of your heart and gently carries it through elegiac highs and low. Wonderful. [Below: The first few minutes of the album.]

THE MAGIC I.D. / I’m So Awake/Sleepless I Feel (Staubgold - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)
Le premier The Magic I.D. m’avait laissé peu convaincu.
A second album for this group of experimental improvisers turned songsters. The Magic I.D.’s debut had left me lukewarm. This one’s longer, more consistent, and better. Margareth Kammerer’ thin voice is not particularly enjoyable, but Christof Kurzmann’s thin voice can be reminiscent of Robert Wyatt’s (“Eric Kicks”, “Mambo”). And the instrumentation (minimal guitar, often textural clarinets, discrete electronics) suggest a more stripped-down take on Wyatt’s soundworld. The expression “skeletons of songs” comes to mind, but these are more than skeletons - let’s say they’re emaciated songs, whispered for fear of tearing up the oh-so-quiet instruments they are barely dressed in.

GAGARIN / 3KA-3 b/w KEDR (Geo Records - merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first manned space flight – Yuri Gagarin’s – techno project Gagarin is released a limited edition CD single (also available as a download). Two slightly dirty glitch techno tracks, one (“KEDR”) letting filter in the background Gagarin’s communications with ground control. Retrofuturistic without getting kitsch, and some good glitch techno no matter the occasion.

ARTISTES VARIÉS-VARIOUS ARTISTS / Historische Aufnahmen/Historical Recordings, Volume 1 (Gagarin Records - merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)
From Gagarin the project, we know move to Gagarin the record label – Felix Kubin’s label. Hmm... Here, Felix offers a collection of old and strange recordings. Wax rolls, 78 rpms and tapes documenting avant-garde works (David Tudor, Hans Henny Jahnn), blurry field recordings (“Marmara sea plankton”, “Machinery recording”) and unusual experiments (“Mechanical-automatic speech apparatus”). A cabinet of curios, surprising, even in this Internet age. Strictly available as an LP. And recommended only to serious ultra-obscure recordings-seekers.

TECHNICAL DRAWINGS / The Ruined Map (Gagarin Records - merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)
Interesting: Melissa St. Pierre plays prepared electric piano (yes, like Eric Glick Rieman), treated in real time; Jesse Stiles composes electroacoustic music out of St. Pierre’s work. The result is an LP featuring clanking beats drawing inspiration from dub and occasionally glitch techno. Somewhere between Glick Rieman’s world, Hauschka’s, Dub Taylor’s, and gamelan. It’s an original idea on paper, but it translates into a relatively limited sound palette. Over eight tracks, I got the impression that the starting idea was quickly covered.

OSANNA / Palepoli (Warner Front)
Should I admit this? This is the very first time the music of Osanna has reached my ears. But don’t worry, every second this record has played has made me regret waiting so long. Palepoli is this Italian progressive rock band’s third album. Released in 1972, it features two side-long tracks (and one very short interlude). It is said that this is their most daring recording, and I believe that. Palepoli pushes back the boundaries of Italian prog rock to avant-garde trenches that are set even farther than Area (vocals excepted). Two very complex pieces that show the heritage of King Crimson (up to and including Lizard) and anticipated the heritage of Henry Cow. Very surprising.
