MEREDITH MONK / Songs of Ascension (ECM)

Acheté au FIMAV 2014, après un concert magique de Meredith Monk. Songs of Ascension est son plus récent disque (2011). Il s’agit d’un cycle de compositions interprétées par son ensemble vocal plus trois musiciens, un quatuor à cordes et deux autres chorales. Un corpus riche et lumineux enregistré dans des conditions exceptionnelles. Chansons simples aux arrangements fouillés, le tout parfaitement exécuté. Difficile de résister. Des solos de percussions (John Hollenbeck) et des passages dissonnants mais délicats du quatuor à cordes ponctuent la séquence, question de changer un peu l’atmosphère. Très réussi.

From my FIMAV 2014 haul, bought after a magical concert by Meredith Monk. Songs of Ascension is her latest CD, though it dates back to 2011. It features a new song cycle performed by her own Vocal Ensemble plus three musicians, a string quartet, and two other choirs. The material is rich, full of light, and recorded under exceptional conditions. Songs are simple, with thoughtful arrangements, and the whole is perfectly executed. Hard to resist. Percussion solos (by John Hollenbeck) and quiet dissonant sequences from the string quartet pepper the set list, bringing other textures to the flow of the album. Quite successful.

KEMIALLISET YSTÄVÄT / Alas Rattoisaa Virtaa (Dekorder - merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)

Il y a bien des choses rafraîchissantes dans un disque de Kemialliset Ystävät: la naïveté, le psychédélisme gentil, l’expérimentation bien intentionnée. Et tout cela se retrouve sur ce nouveau disque, un vinyle (mais je n’ai eu qu’une copie sur CDr). Une dizaine de pièces courtes (sauf la lente et hallucinée “Vettä Yarahille”), punchées, conçues pour toucher le centre du plaisir tout en brouillant les zones cérébrales autour.

There’s a lot of refreshing stuff on a Kemialliset Ystävät record: naivete, gentle psychedelism, well-intentioned experimentalism. And you’ll find all of that on their new album, an LP (but I’m reviewing it from a CDr transfer). Ten short and punchy pieces (except for the slow-paced and hallucinated “Vettä Yarahille”), all designed to hit your pleasure centre while scrambling the cerebral zones around it.

DATASHOCK / Keine Oase in Sicht (Dekorder - merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)

Vinyle double chez Dekorder (même principe que ci-dessus: j’ai reçu un transfert sur CDr) du collectif Datashock, qui roule sa bosse depuis un bail, mais que je rencontre réellement ici pour la première fois. Rock psychédélique entre Amon Düül II et Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O., avec une petite dose de No-Neck Blues Band. Bon dosage entre morceaux courts et longs, entre pulsation et flottement aussi. Ma foi, c’est fort sympathique.

A double LP on Dekorder (again, all I got was a CDr) by the Datashock collective. These guys have been going on for a while now, but this is my first real encounter with their music. Psychedelic rock that’s halfway between Amon Düül II and Acid Mothers Temple & The Mleting Paraiso U.F.O., with a small dose of No-Neck Blues Band thrown in to temper things out. Nice dosage between short tracks and long jams, also between rhythmic anchorage and freeform drifting. You know what? This is pretty good.
