Nous sommes fin septembre 1972, au dernier concert d’une courte tournée avec le Grand Wazoo, un grand orchestre. Tournée mythique de Zappa, parce que ce projet, très difficile à mettre sur pied, a été le lieu de création de plusieurs pièces qu’on a connu ensuite sous des formes très différentes. À commencer par “The Adventures of Greggery Peccary”, écrite à l’origine pour un projet de ballet, et qui trouvera son aboutissement sur l’album Studio Tan (ça demeure, à mon avis, le summum de Zappa). Greggery prend ici la forme d’une suite instrumentale en quatre mouvements, jazzée par moments, très complexe ailleurs, avec de longs passages d’improvisation dirigée et suggestive. Cette version n’est pas aboutie, mais elle tient bien la route, et elle est si différente qu’on pourrait la voir comme une œuvre entièrement distincte – comme “Farther O’Blivion”, d’ailleurs. Également au programme, la première mouture d’ “Approximate”, une pièce audacieuse qui occupera une place de choix dans les concerts des Mothers par la suite. On a aussi droit à de très solides interprétations de “The Grand Wazoo” et “Big Swifty”, écrites spécifiquement pour cette instrumentation luxuriante. Mais la grosse surprise, pour moi, est “Variant I Processional March”, une composition transitoire, jamais rejouée ensuite, qui dessine une ligne de cause à effet entre “Dwarf Nebula Processional March” et “Re-Gyptian Strut”. Je n’avais seulement envisagé que la seconde puisse découler de la première, mais là, je ne plus le désentendre!  [Ci-dessous: “Variant I Processional March”, mais pas l’enregistrement sur Wazoo! Cette version vient d’un bootleg de qualité sonore nettement inférieure!]

We are in late September 1972, at the final concert of a short tour with The Grand Wazon, a large big band/orchestra. This was a mythic Zappa tour, because this hard-to-get-on-the-road project was the birth place of several major Zappa works that would become famous later in much different incarnations. Starting with “The Adventures of Greggery Peccary”, originally written for a ballet project that never was. The track eventually reached its fruition on the Studio Tan album (and remains, for me, Zappa’s ultimate peak). Greggery here takes the form of a four-movement instrumental suite, jazzy at times, very complex at times, with long stretches of suggestive conducted improvisation. This version is not fully formed but it works out well, and it is different enough to be seen as a separate work – like “Farther O’Blivion”. We also get to hear the first draft of “Approximate,” a bold piece that would become a staple of Zappa’s mid-‘70s live band. This concert includes strong performances of “The Grand Wazoo” and “Big Swifty”, two pieces written specifically for this lush big band instrumentation. However, the most surprising piece in this program, to me, is “Variant I Processional March,” a transitional composition that would never get performed again after this tour, a piece that draws an unexpected line from “Dwarf Nebula Processional March” to “Re-Gyptian Strut.” I had never even considered the possibility that the latter could have stemmed from the former, but now I’ll never be able to un-hear their relationship!  [Below: “Variant I Processional March”, but not the Wazoo CD recording!
