JOHANNES HELDÉN / System (Irrlicht)

Johannes Heldén fait dans la musique ambiante conceptuelle. System est une œuvre qui se décline en trois parties publiées séparément: un texte, un disque et une série de photographies. Le disque est un vinyle “picture disc” dans une pochette de vinyle transparente. Il propose sept morceaux planants – synthés et enregistrements de terrain auxquels viennent se mêler les voix de Mariam Wallentin et de Markus Krunegård. Musique diaphane, comme un vague souvenir, rêverie sur un daguerréotype qui s’efface. Du coup, ça manque de substance.

Johannes Heldén makes conceptual ambien music. System is a work in three parts published separately: a text, a record, and a series of photogtaphs. The record is a 12” picture disc in a clear polyvinyl sleeve. It contains seven quiet pieces – synths and field recordings, with the voices of Mariam Wallentin and Markus Krunegård drifting in at times. Diaphanous music that sounds like a vague rememberance, a dream about a fading daguerreotype. I found it lacking in substance.

THE ELECTRICS / Fylkingen (Ilk)

Troisième album des Electrics (Sture Ericson, Axel Dörner, Joe Williamson, Raymond Strid – une instrumentation entièrement acoustique), paru sur vinyle seulement en mai 2013, sept ans après leur disque précédent. Et le groupe est toujours en activité. Improvisation libre entre musiciens aguerris, qui se connaissent bien et qui savent trouver l’équilibre entre écoute et énergie. Une écoute stimulante, très agréable, riche en moments forts. Sur vinyle noir (180 grammes?), pochette simple.

The third album by The Electrics (Sture Ericson, Axel Dörner, Joe Willamson, Raymond Strid – an all-acoustic line-up), released in May 2013, only as an LP, seven years after their previous opus. And the band is still active. Free improvisation between seasoned musicians who know each other well and know how to balance listening and energy. A stimulating listen, quite enjoyable, and rich in highlights. On black vinyl (180 grams?), simple sleeve.

THE ÄGG / The Ägg (Found You)

Une session réalisée par Joe Williamson et mettant en vedette un béhémoth baptisé The Ägg: trois guitaristes électriques (dont David Stackenäs), trois bassistes électriques (dont Williamson) et QUATRE batteurs (dont Raymond Strid). C’est l’antithèse de The Electrics, et cette fois c’est très électrique... et électrifiant! De la “fire music” pure, feu roulant d’activité fébrile et bruyante, essaim bourdonnant d’abeilles qui, aussi excitées soient-elles n’entrent jamais en collision les unes avec les autres. “Teledeportation” est sans doute dirigée, puisqu’on y a droit à des arrêts et des reprises d’une grande netteté. A session produced by Joe Williamson and featuring a behemoth called The Ägg: three electric guitarists (David Stackenäs among them), three electric bassists (Williamson among them), and FOUR drummers (Raymond Strid among them). This is the antithesis of The Electrics, and this time the music is indeed electrified... and electrifying! Pure fire music, an unstoppable train of noisy action, a buzzing swarm of bees – and however excited bees are, they never collide with one another. “Teledeportation” is most likely conducted, because it features sharp stops. KOHEI MATSUNAGA / Drawings (Fang Bomb – merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)

Kohei Matsunaga est l’homme derrière le projet de techno expérimentale NHK et le pseudo Koyxen Mattsunagnen. Drawings est un livre relié toile proposant 40 dessins de sa plume. Des dessins souvent minimalistes, souvent animaliers (beaucoup d’oiseaux), psychédéliques (personnages qui se contortionnent selon des lignes de fuite ou des traits impossibles). Style naïf, contenu inégal: certains dessins sont étonnants et rayonnants, d’autres donnent une forte impression d’amateurisme. Mais il y a plus de bon que de mauvais, et la présentation est très soignée. Le livre s’accompagne d’un 45 tours proposant quatre courtes pièces. Trois d’entre elles sont poussées par un rythme insistant (“7” et “632_” me font penser à Serph en mode plus restreint), tandis que l’autre, très courte, se composent de sons de cymbales très abstraits.

Kohei Matsunaga is the man behind the experimental techno project NHK and the alial Koyxen Mattsunagnen. Drawings is a cloth-bound book culling 40 of his drawings. These works are often minimalistic, often picture animals (lots of birds), in a psychedelic fashion (people dancing in impossible ways, incompletely drawn characters). Naive style, uneven contents: some drawings are surprisingly and shining with talent; others look amateurish. However, there is more good than bad in here, and the presentation is sleek. The book comes with a 45rpm 7” record containing four short pieces. Three of them are backed by insistent beats (“7” and “632_” evoke a toned-down Serph). The fourth one consists of very abstract cymbal sounds.
