BENJAMIN DUBOC / Primare Cantus (Ayler Records)
C’est plutôt inusité pour moi d’être exposé pour la première fois à un musicien à travers un coffret triple. Primare Cantus propose divers projets du contrebassiste Benjamin Duboc. Le premier disque consiste en une pièce solo, sorte de bourdon microtonal continu qui rappelle certains territoires défrichés par Peter Kowald. Les deux autres disques proposent divers duos et trios d’improvisation libre avec Sylvain Guérineau, Didier Lasserre, jean-Luc Petit, Sophie Agnel, Pascal Battus et Christian Pruvost, dont le son de trompette très caractéristique est à l’origine du meilleur moment du coffret. Une somme imposante pour un premier tour de piste (en ce qui me concerne).
It’s rather unusual for me to get my first exposure to a musician through a 3-CD set. Primare Cantus features various projects from doublebassist Benjamin Duboc. Disc 1 consists in a solo piece, a continuous microtonal drone somewhat reminiscent of territories pioneered by Peter Kowald. The other two discs feature free improvisation duos and trios with Sylvain Guérineau, Didier Lasserre, Jean-Luc Petit, Sophie Agnel, Pascal Battus, and Christian Pruvost – the latter’s unmistakable trumpet tone being responsible for the highlight of this set. An impressive introduction.
JON DE ROSA / Anchored EP (Silber Records)
L’homme derrière le projet Aarktica livre un premier disque solo, un EP comportant quatre splendides chansons aux arrangements acoustiques délicats. Une voix grave et juste, des textes tendres – c’est In Gowan Ring moins le côté gothique. Court mais joli. [Ci-dessous: Écoutez la chanson titre, gracieuseté de Silber Records.]
The man behind Aarktica delivers his debut solo album, an EP with four gorgeous songs with delicate acoustic arrangements. A rich true-sounding baritone voice and tender lyrics – it’s In Gowan Ring minus the Gothic element. Short but very nice. [Below: Listen to the title song, available on Silber’s website.]
TOM WAITS / Rain Dogs (Island)
C’est vendredi, alors je me fais plaisir. Je pourrais argumenter que Rain Dogs représente le summum de la carrière de Tom Waits, mais rien ne fait l’unanimité parmi les fans de ce grand maître de la voix rauque et de l’arrangement claudiquant. Alors qu’il suffise que je dise que c’est mon album préféré, qu’il touche toutes mes cordes sensibles et que je n’y changerais rien.
It’s Friday, so I’m treating myself. I could argue that Rain Dogs represents Tom Waits at his peak, but the great master of the raspy voice’s fans are notorious for disagreeing on everything. Therefore, suffice it to say that this is my favourite record of his, that it pushes all the right buttons, and that I wouldn’t change the smallest detail in it.
BARZIN / Notes to an Absent Lover (Monotreme Records)
Troisième album de Barzin, splendide auteur-compositeur-interprète qui publie un disque aux trois ans - celui-ci remonte à 2009, je viens tout juste de tomber dessus. Des chansons d’amour tendres et douloureuses, d’une simplicité désarmante, arrangées avec soin. De la chanson accessible à tous, mais issues du shoegazing et influencées par les courants post-rock.
Third album for Barzin, a splendid singer-songwriter who releases an album every three years – this one goes back to 2009, but I just stumbled upon it. tender and painful love songs of disarming simplicity, carefully arranged. Songs for all audiences, but born out of the shoegazing movement and influenced by post-rock.
