Boris Savoldelli returns to the spirit of Insanology. Biocosmopolitan presents the wide-appeal, charming, melodious side of this one-man-singing-band - Italy’s answer to Bobby McFerrin. Entertaining and rich in vocal textures of all kinds, Biocosmopolitan also offers selected instrumental touches - the participation of bassist Jimmy Haslip on the title track is particularly nice. Savoldelli’s voice is true and enticing, not fabulous though - his strength resides in his creative use of multitracking and looping. And there’s a ton of that all over this record.  [Below: The album’s preview clip.]

COPERNICUS / Cipher and Decipher (Moonjune Records)
The Moonjune label is engaged in a reissue program of Copernicus’ albums, but Cipher and Decipher is a brand new creation. And honestly, I’m impressed. The rambling poet’s lyrics are very strong (nuclear physics and existentialism) and his musicians provide him with scorching free-rock vamps. With age, Copernicus’ voice is starting to sound like Lewis Black’s - minus the vulgarities. The man is menacing when exorting us to turn subatomic. There’s magic happening here, at a higher level than on his previous effort Disappearance, which was overlong.

MARBIN / Breaking the Cycle (Moonjune Records)

Breaking the Cycle features 11 tracks, most of them short, in an instrumental fusion jazz style with many other influences thrown in - blues here (“Bar Stomp”), songwriting here (“Winds of Grace”), prog rock lyricism (“Western Sky”), etc. Melodious, well played, inspired, but neither striking nor memorable.

A few years after his twin brother Jean-Luc, here’s Thierry Payssan - the keyboard half of French prog rockers Minimum Vital - in his first solo outing. Dans la maison vide [“In the Empty House”] is made of short instrumental, mainly piano tracks, with touches of organ, synth and programmed beats. But the focus rests on romantic, neo-classical melodies, with a more progressive-like development here and there. Pretty, a little too cute, less artistically convincing than Jean-Luc Payssan’s Pierrots and Arlequins. A footnote in Minimum Vital’s venerable discography.

Basically a guitar/keyboards/drums trio, here augmented with a bassist-slash-saxophonist. French. Instrumental. Interesting compositions blending prog rock and jazz rock with heavier influences (the track “Renaissances”). Pieces are long (7-10 minutes) but well constructed, with no exaggeration in the solos department. Solid work. “Le Bas Art de l’épouvante” hits it right on the nail.
