VARIOUS ARTISTS-ARTISTES VARIÉS / Panama! 2: Latin Sounds, Cumbia Tropical & Calypso Funk on the Isthmus 1967-77 (SoundWay / Forced Exposure)
Volume 1 in this series was pretty interesting, and so is this follow-up. The title says it all: Latin music of the ‘60s & ‘70s, ranging from cumbia to funk, through salsa and calypso, all seen through Panaman eyes, in hues slightly different from Cuban music. Sound quality varies greatly, artistic quality less so, and the good songs are really strong. The whole thing tips resolutely toward the dance floor – there’s little material for introspection in this collection. And the generous booklet presents a good overview of the history and music of Panama.
Le premier volume de cette série était fort intéressant et celui-ci aussi. Le titre dit tout: musique latino des années 60-70, allant du cumbia au funk, en passant par la salsa et le calypso, le tout à la sauce panaméenne, légèrement différente des styles cubains. La qualité sonore est très variable, la qualité artistique l’est moins, et les bonnes chansons sont vraiment solides. Le tout penche fortement vers la musique dansante - peu d’introspection dans cette collection. Et le livret généreux tisse un portrait solide de l’histoire et de la musique de Panama.

STEFANO PASTOR / Chants (Slam Productions)
Si l’étiquette Slam Productions fait surtout dans le jazz d’avant-garde, elle publie à l’occasion un disque plus accessible. C’est le cas de Chants du violoniste italien Stefano Pastor. Il s’agit essentiellement d’un récital de violon à travers le “songbook” jazz (Naima, Caravan, Easy Living, The Song is You), avec quelques originales. Violon solo, quelques pièces chantées, deux ou trois avec ajouts de guitare ou de percussions, tout fait par Pastor. Son violon a un son chantant, lyrique, qui ressemble souvent à de la flûte traversière, étonnamment. C’est beau, introspectif, un peu larmoyant dans l’ensemble, mais exécuté avec émotion.
The Slam Productions label usually deals in avant-garde jazz and free improvisation, but it also occasionally releases more accessible records. Italian violinist Stefano Pastor’s Chants CD falls in that latter category. This is basically a violin recital based on the American jazz songbook (Naima, Caravan, Easy Living, The Song is You), with a few original thrown in. Mostly solo violin, some pieces sung, two or three with added guitar and percussion, all performed by Pastor. His violin sound is singing, lyrical, often uncannily close to a concert flute. It’s beautiful, introspective, a little plaintive overall, but executed with feeling.

AGUSTÍ FERNÁNDEZ / Un llamp que no s’acaba mai (Psi Records)
Wow. Sincèrement, ça faisait longtemps que je n’avais pas entendu un disque d’improvisation libre aussi bon. Un superbe concert entre le pianiste espagnol Augstí Fernández et les Britanniques John Edwards (contrebasse) et Mark Sanders (batterie). Fernández sait être lyrique au bon moment, les deux autres sont des improvisateurs aguerris, et à trois ils développent une chimie exemplaire. Du grand art!

SCANNER / Rockets, Unto the Edges of Edges (BineMusic / Forced Exposure)
Scanner sings! Well, okay, it’s just a wordless part on the first track, but still, it’s unheard of! Joking aside, Rockets... is his most accomplished record in quite a while: surprisingly melodious electronica that retains the textural side that made him, in the ‘90s, a star of the then-burgeoning experimental ambiant scene. A guest appearance by Michael Gira on one track, a Fripp-ian guitar part on another – this electronica album clearly has more to offer than it may seem at first.
Scanner chante! Oui, bon, un air sans paroles sur la première pièce du disque, mais quand même, c’est de la nouveauté! Blague à part, Rockets... est son disque l eplus accompli depuis belle lurette: une électronique étonnamment mélodique, sans perdre le côté textural qui l’a hissé au sommet de l’électronique expérimentale ambiante dans les années 90. Participation de Michael Gira sur une pièce, guitare très frippienne sur une autre – ce disque d’électronique offre plus qu’il n’en paraît.
