GILLES AUBRY / Berlin Backyards (Crónica)
Aubry habite à Berlin depuis 2002. Dans le but de connaître plus intimement cette ville, il a enregistré ses arrière-cours. De ces enregistrements, il a tiré un cycle de musique concrète saisissant. Bon équilibre entre traitements et enregistrements nus, solide évocation de la vie secrète d’une grande ville. À réécouter dans de meilleures circonstances.
Aubry has been residing in Berlin since 2002. In an effort to get to know the city more intimately, he has recorded its backyard life. Out of these field recordings, he has build a striking musique concrete cycle. Nice balance between treatments and raw recordings, a strong evocation of the secret life of a metropole. Must listen to this one again under better conditions.

J’aime beaucoup ce duo. Sa musique (improvisation électroacoustique très expérimentale) m’interpelle et me mystifie. Excellent sens de l’intrigue, de la tension, du déplacement sensoriel qui mène à découvrir une autre beauté.
I like this duo a lot. Their brand of highly-experimental electroacoustic improvisation beckons me and mystifies me. Great sense of intrigue, tension, and sensory displacement leading to the discovery of an “other” form of beauty.

Derrière ce titre se cache une compilations d’improvisations au saxophone baryton. Au menu: l’Italien Carlo Actis Dato, l’Américain Charles Evans, le Britannique George Haslam, le Finlandais Mikko Innanen, le Russe Sergey Letov et le Cubain Javier Zalba. Je suis un fan fini de Dato et je connaissais bien Haslam, mais j’ai eu l’occasion de découvrir d’autres très bons souffleurs. Bon équilibre entre solos et pièces avec accompagnement, ainsi qu’entre approches jazz et plus “free”.
Behind this title hides a compilation of baritone saxophone improvisations. The program includes Carlo Actis Dato (Italy), Charles Evan (USA), George Haslam (UK), Mikko Innanen (Finland), Sergey Letov (Russia), and Javier Zalba (Cuba). I am already an inconditional fan of Dato and I know Haslam’s work pretty well, but this CD gave the opportunity to hear more good blowers. The album includes several tracks from each saxman, and offers a nice balance between solos and accompanied pieces, and between jazzier takes and free playing.
ALVA NOTO, RYUICHI SAKAMOTO & ENSEMBLE MODERN / Utp_ (Raster-Noton - Forced Exposure)
Merveilleux! Une commande de la ville de Mannheim (Allemagne) pour son 400e anniversaire. Carsten Nicolai (Alva Noto) et Sakamoto reprennent leur collaboration, en s’acoquinant l’excellent orchestre contemporain Ensemble Modern. Une longue oeuvre (75 minutes) en 10 mouvements pour piano (Sakamoto), électroniques et instruments acoustiques. C’est très lent, voire statique par moments, simple, mais très beau, enchanteur pour qui aime l’électronique expérimentale ambiante ou la musique contemporaine plutôt minimale (et non minimaliste). Il s’agit d’un CD+DVD du concert, et les jeux de lumière sur écran valent la peine d’être vus (surtout dans “Silence”). Le DVD contient aussi un documentaire en coulisses de 40 minutes.
Fabulous! Commissioned by the city of Mannheim (Germany) for its 400th anniversary. Carsten Nicolai (Alva Noto) and Sakamoto resumed their collaboration and drafted the excellent contemporary orchestra Ensemble Modern. A long 75-minute work in 10 movements for piano (Sakamoto), electronics, and acoustic instruments. It’s very slow, even static at times, simple, but beautiful and entrancing for whoever likes experimental ambient music or minimal (not minimalist!) contemporary music. This is a CD+DVD set of the concert, and the lighting design is definitely worth being seen (especially in “Silence”). The DVD also include a 40-minute making-of documentary.
