RICE CORPSE / Mrs. Rice (Dual Plover - merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)

Lucas Abela is not your common musician. He hooks a contact mic (plugged into a belt of home effects) to a pane of glass, then he smears KY on said glass, then rubs his face on said glass! In the heat of the moment, the glass usually breaks, leading to Lucas ending his performances with a bleeding smile. It’s conceptual art. Alright, it’s also disgusting. And taken separately, the sound component of his performances is an uninteresting form of extreme noise. However, Rick Corpse is an ad hoc group he put together while in China, with a free rock drummer and a pianist. The trio’s improvisations are a lot more interesting to listen to! Somewhere between Merzbow and the free rock group Scorch Trio. AND, you don’t have to watch the guy perform! [Below: Amateur video excerpt from a solo Abela performance in July 2008. Honestly, there’s something here worth respecting this artist for!]

MERIDIEM / Full Catastrophe (Pangea - Voiceprint)

First of all, this is not Meridiem’s best line-up (which consisted of Percy Howard, Charles Hayward, Fred Frith, and Bill Laswell), but the one with Howard, Hayward, Vernon Reid (of Living Colour) and Trey Gunn (of King Crimson). Full Catastrophe is a recently released archival document consisting of three undated studio pieces (“187” being the highlight) and seven tracks from a live 1999 recording. The studio tracks are mundane and the live stuff has an appallingly hollow sound quality. To start with, this band (something like a sub-Praxis) boasts little meat around its bone, but this recording strips off most if not all of its spirit. It’s long, uneventful, and undecipherable (Howard’s voice is often lost in the mix).

No Name / 20 Candles (Musea)

For its fifth release and 20th anniversary, this Neo-Prog band from Luxemburg (do you know a lot of those?) opted for a “remodeled best of” approach. The CD features two or three songs from each of their previous albums, rerecorded, plus a new song. This process allowed them to straighten out a few crooked things in their earlier efforts, but it doesn’ make No Name a great band. Think of Pallas, Marillion or Pendragon in DIY mode. It’s not bad, but it’s not particularly inspired or inspiring, unless you’re a die-hard neo-prog fan.

2009-06-11: Léandre/Parker, Peter Broderick, Simon/Klimperei/Telefunken

JOËLLE LÉANDRE & WILLIAM PARKER / Live at Dunois (Leo Records)

This may not be the fabulous performance one might expect, but it’s still a very fine collaboration between two MAJOR improvising bassists. Recorded in January 2009. The finale, where Léandre vocalizes as only she can, sends shivers of pleasure down my spine.

PETER BRODERICK / Music for Falling from Trees (Western Vinyl)

A piece written for a dance by Adrienne Hart. Very pretty suite featuring acoustic and treated piano and violin. This is the best CD by Broderick I have heard so far: concise, focused, well executed, nice feeling. I’m thinking of Sylvain Chauveau and the Type label’s roster (Ryan Teague, Helios, etc.). [Below: Album’s official video trailer.]

DON SIMON, KLIMPEREI & TELEFUNKEN / 25 Songs Looking for Ears (Acidsoxx Musicks)

Tant mieux! [Ci-dessous: Extrait de “I Love Your Temporal Lobe”, provenant du site d’Acidsoxx.]

To me, in this equation, there is one constant (Klimperei) and two unknown variables (Don Simon and Telefunken). Sadly, the CD packaging gives no detail about the parties involved. However, the music is typically Klimperei-like: toy music, naive and shaky, simple but hastily thrown together, and very whimsical. There are more instruments in the mix than usual, and the writing might be a bit punchier and dirtier, but in all other respects, this is pure Klimperei. And that’s just fine by me! TARAB / Take All of the Ships from the Harbour, and Sail Them Straight to Hell (23Five)

On first listen (and a rather unfocused one, I must admit; things are hectic around here today), this is a very interesting piece of sound art. The introduction (a sonic blast that emerges from the depths of floating frequencies) is stunning. A slow-paced and finely-detailed composition of metallic and aquatic textures. But it’s not a drone, more like a piece of electroacoustic music or sound art a la Daniel Menche or even John Duncan. I must absolutely give this one a second listen under perfect conditions. This might be a gem.

MARTEAU ROUGE & EVAN PARKER / Live (In Situ)

A meeting in January 2008 between the great improviser/sax player and the French trio Marteau Rouge (Jean-François Pauvros, Jean-Marc Foussat, Makoto Sato). I was expecting something thundering (like Étage 34, perhaps?), but I was wrong. This is dense and intense, but subtle too. The CD runs a bit too long (76 minutes), but this is solid stuff. That being said, I wouldn’t call it a must for fans of Parker, who has released better albums eslewhere this year. [Below: Marteau rouge (without Parker), live amateur footage, 2007.]

PERFECT VACUUM / A Guide to The Music of the 21st Century (Acidsoxx Musicks)

Now, here’s a strange one! A collaboration between guitarist Lukas Simonis (AA Kismet, Vril, etc.) and singer(?)/iconoclast Dave Marsh. File under “pop/rock,” though this leaves a lot wanting, because there’s also some Americana in there (silly banjo), and psychedelia, and avant-garde, and a healthy dose of ridicule. It’s colorful (extremely so at times) and pretty funny (disorienting too if you walk in unsuspectingly), but does it hold up? We’ll see with the next few spins. For now though, it makes fine entertainment for a fan of avant-prog and silly avant-rock like me. Somewhere between Condor Moments and a silly Bob Drake. [Below: An excerpt from the album, taken from Acidsoxx’s website.]

NATE YOUNG / Regression (iDEAL Recordings) merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)

Don’t judge a book by its cover, Mama used to say. For instance, just because you’re a member of Wolf Eyes doesn’t mean you’re doing all-out noise music. This solo album by Nate Young has much to offer to fans of electronic or electroacoustic music. Yes, it rumbles a lot, but the music is skillfully sculpted and shows a keen sense of tension and release. It’s evocative, but not in the “cinematic” sense (I’m starting to hate that word). In fact, it’s too gloomy and focused to be cinematic!

DESCRIPTION
Tribute to Hugh Hopper (RIP): The great bass player Hugh Hopper died last Sunday (7 June 2009) of leukemia. He was 64 and, until July 2008, was still very much active and creative. He was a very talented composer (songs like “Facelift” and “Was a Friend” will remain forever etched in my brain), and a fabulous musician (with his very own fuzz bass sound). Tonight’s show was entirely devoted to him.

Let’s start the day with some electroacoustic music. This new CD by Jacques Tremblay is uneven, but certainly not uninteresting. Three works. First is “Espresso Espressivo” (12 minutes), a piece about... coffee! I don’t like coffee (I’m a tea man), but I appreciate this classy collage of form plays and sound plays around the brown bean (although the reference to Gainsbourg is so easy it’s cheap). “L’énigme anima” (9 minutes) is the most abstract piece on the program, and its esthetics is very close to Yves Daoust. The piece de résistance is “Empathies entropiques” (47 minutes), about otherness and based on conversations in various foreign languages, seemingly captured on the fly. Some sections are captivating and original (“La petite Camille”) but others are tiringly long (“Haiti troubadour”). I am not convinced that the composer succeeds in conveying the idea of cultural exchange and reciprocity. In fact, I’m downright uncertain about this (over)long piece. I’ll need to give it another listen if I want to make up my mind. [Below: An excerpt from Espresso Espressivo you can listen to on empreintes DIGITALes’ website.]

VYACHESLAV GUYVORONSKY / Interventions into Bach & Mozart (Leo Records)

This Russian trumpeter is in a league of his own. He is a Baroque-Modern improvising composer, something that has become clear to me with his previous Leo CD, the exquisite Caprichos. This here project was started ten years ago and consists in works by Bach and Mozart, upon which Guyvoronsky has grafted compositions of his own, pieces that are self-standing yet function as counterpoints to the great masterpieces. The results are stunning and thoroughly enjoyable, but also destabilizing to say the least. I must point out the 32-minute “Intervention I”, based on Bach’s Franzosische Ouverture, here rearranged and overcomposed for accordion (Evelyn Petrova!), flute, bass, trumpet, and voice.

THE PROJECT_PALE / Our Inventions and How They Fail Us (Ohm Resistance - merci à/thanks to Massive Music)

Nowadays, the most opposite music genres get the blending treatment. Electro-Metal? It’s the best I can find to describe this group consisting of Jason Selden (a drum’n’bass artist) and Submerged. The music lies somewhere between Isis/Lento and OSI/Chroma Key. VERY heavy guitars, a prog rock influence on “Driving These Icy Roads” (the album’s highlight), but also a languid pace and overstretched tracks that make the whole thing drag. In other words: good idea, but the execution needs to be tightened up. Still quite a surprise coming from what is basically a drum’n”bass label. Bill Laswell in the producer’s chair.

And now, for some preparation for tonight’s Délire musical:

A very satisfying second listen (find my first comments here). This is definitely Miriodor’s darkest album since Rencontres in the early ‘80s. Dark but oh so thrilling, dense, and compositionally rich. Best album of 2009? Hmmm, might be. And I totally agree with my AMG colleague Dave Lynch’s review (here).

2e écoute/2nd listen: FINN. / The Best Low-Priced Heatbreakers You Can Own (Erased Tapes)

(Premier commentaire ici.)

Might be a little too sweet in the strings department, but it’s still a very nice folk-pop album. The Sigur Rós influence, overwhelming on first listen, has pulled back a bit to let the personal songwriting come through. (My first comments here.)

2009-06-08: Hugh Hopper (RIP)

Journal d'écoute / Listening Diary

2009-06-08

So I turn on the computer this morning, and the first piece of news to appear on the screen is the death, yesterday, of the great bassist Hugh Hopper. I had been following his career for a long while (non, not since Soft Machine, I’m too young for that), and I had tremendous respect for the composer, the musician, and the man. I have had the pleasure of exchanging emails with him, and he was an endearingly nice mine to converse with. He had been diagnosed with leukemia in June 2008 and we knew he was ill. Still, this is a hard blow. He leaves a very significant body of work, out ofwhich his stint with Soft Machine is only the tip of the iceberg. I will spend my whole day revisiting some of his records. The pile of new releases can wait...

Some info:

His website.

His bio on the Calyx website (much more complete).

HUGH HOPPER / Jazzloops (Burning Shed)

Hopper’s name is mostly associated with so-called “Canterbury prog rock” and jazz-rock, but he also had serious interests in experimental music. He was great at sound collage and loopwork. He has recorded little music in that genre, but the few records he has released are excellent, starting ith his first solo album, the disquieting 1984. Jazzlooops is much more recent (2002) and marked a come-back to this form of work – and a succesful one at that. Eleven pieces consisting of bass/keyboard/sample loops, with several guests chiming in. Very accessible considering the experimental nature of the project.

HUGHSCORE / Delta Flora (Cuneiform)

In the mid-to-late-‘90s, Hugh Hopper rekindled his interest in the rock side of things and songwriting, which led to a series of fabulous records, something that I personally consider to be his best post-Soft Machine period. Delta Flora (1999) is the last of three collaborations with the group Caveman Shoestore (hence, the name Hughscore). This is an excellent avant-rock record with strong prog and fusion leanings, but a dominating alt-rock colour that surprised back than but, 10 years down the path, proves to have been ahead of its time. This CD features the best recorded version of the song “Was a Friend” (which Hopper also recorded with Robert Wyatt and Lisa S. Klossner), and an excellent revamped reading of his classic “Facelift”, among other high marks. Delta Flora will remain my favorite record on Hugh. It’s also one of Cuneiform Records’ best-ever releases. In short, a must-have.

HUGH HOPPER & ALAN GOWEN / Two Rainbows Daily (Cuneiform)

A difficult listen, not because of the music (quite the contrary!), but for this record’s funereal resonances. You see, this collaboration between Hopper and keyboardist Alan Gowen (Gilgamesh, National Health) was recorded in 1978, two years prior to Gowen’s death… from leukemia. And so 30 years or so before Hopper would die from the same illness. So sad. Two Rainbows Daily is a beautiful record of sweet-and-sour instrumental pieces, featuring only electric bass and analog synths (mostly the miniMoog). It’s slow, peaceful, and so introspective. [Below: An excerpt found on YouTube.]

HOPPER S. KLOSSNER / Different (Blueprint)

The first of two records in collaboration with singer Lisa S. Klossner, from the same period as the Hughscore project (1997). Avant-alternative-electro-pop songs, synthetic sounding (though there’s a lot of guests, including Elton Dean), dense lyrics, and a vocal delivery that evokes Anne Clark if she’d ever known how to sing. A comparison with The Remote Viewers is in order too. A very fine CD full of strange and meandering melodies, plus a disquieting version of “Was a Friend.”

HUGH HOPPER / Hopper Tunity Box (Cuneiform)

Released in 1977 (and reissued by Cuneiform in 2007), Hopper Tunity Box is an essential item. Compositions by Hopper performed by a stellar group (Elton Dean, Nigel Morris, Gary Windo, Mark Charig, amon others) in a jazz-rock vein, with the bass-heavy style so typical of Hugh. Fans of Soft Machine’s Third need to hear this! Enjoyable from A to Z, this one is aging very well. It was bold back then and remains hard to pin down now.

HUGH HOPPER & JULIAN WHITFIELD / In a Dubious Manner (Burning Shed)

A collaboration released in 2003. Hopper and Whitfield on basses/guitars, loops, keys, and vocals (Whitfield), for a record of beat-driven and slightly sombre songs, in a loop-based alternative style that occasionally verges on hip-hop. Unpretentious but fienly chiselled. Once again, it highlights Hopper’s talent at writing punchy unusual songs.

I instinctively went mostly for Hugh’s rock projects today, but I just had to conclude this day’s worth of listening with one of his more typical jazz-rock projects. This is a very fine improvisation quartet featuring Simon Picard (sax), Steve Franklin (keys) and Charles Hayward (drums). Music with roots into Canterbury jazz-rock, developed through the post-Soft Machine projects (Soft Head, Soft Heap, Soft Machine Legacy). Improvised jazz-rock that barks and bites, and shows how, as late as 2007, Hopper still had a lot of creativity in him.
