HEATHER WOODS BRODERICK / From the Ground (Preservation - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)
Un premier album très réussi pour cette auteur-compositrice-interprète multi-instrumentiste. Remarquez le second nom de famille: c’est la sœur de Peter Broderick, qui participe aussi à l’album. Elle a la même touche délicate que son frangin. Un album de chansons amères et mélancoliques, à base d’instruments acoustiques (piano, violon, guitare) et de douces textures électroniques. Rien de pressé, tout est développé finement, à point nommé, pour habiller son filet de voix. Ça s’inscrit tout à fait dans le courant folktronica, mais c’est une écriture somme toute intemporelle. A successful debut from this multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter. She is Peter Broderick’s sister, and her brother plays on her album. She has the same delicate touch too. An album of sour and melancholy songs based on acoustic instruments (piano, violin, guitar) and quiet electronic textures. Nothing rushed, everything develops in time, preciously, dressing up her little kernel of voice. This fits the folktronica description, but the songwriting is timeless. GUNDA GOTTSCHALK & XU FENGXIA / You Lan (Disques Victo)
Les connaisseurs du FIMAV savaient que LE concert de l’édition 2008 à sortir sur disque était ce duo entre la violoniste allemande Gunda Gottschalk et la joueuse de guzheng Xu Fengxia (d’origine chinoise, maintenant domiciliée en Allemagne). Quelle complicité, quelle magie, quelle complémentarité entre ces deux grandes improvisatrices, qui ont donné une prestation empreinte d’émotion, d’exploration et de vocalisation. L’être humain mis à nu, poétisé et réinventé en une entité qui assume et accepte ses contrastes et contradictions. Et rien (ou très très peu) de cela ne s’est perdu dans le transfert sur disque.
FIMAV connoisseurs knew that this was THE 2008 FIMAV concert that just had to come out on CD. What telepathy, magic, and complimentary between German voilinist Gunda Gottschalk and guzheng player Xu Fengxia! These two great improvisers gave a performance filled with emotion, exploration, and vocalizations. The human being stripped naked, poetized, and reinvented into an entity accepting and embracing his contrasts and contradictions. And nothing (or very very little) of that is lost on this pristine recording,
