MCCORMICK DUO / McDuo (Ravello)

Le percussionniste Robert McCormick (du McCormick Percussion Group) et la flûtiste Kim McCormick, dans un programme de duos pour flûte et percussions. Un disque élégant, rafiné, qui propose un répertoire inusité. Malheureusement, le choix des œuvres rend la chose un peu monotone. Néanmoins, la pièce titre signée Paul Reller et, surtout, la suite “2 Dirges - 3 Dances” de Stephen Montague se distinguent.

Percussionist Robert McCormick (of the McCormick Percussion Group) and flutist Kim McCormick in an entire program of duets for flute and percussion. An elegant, sophisticated record featuring a seldom-heard repertoire. Sadly, the selection of works turns out to be a bit monotonous. Still, Paul Reller’s title track and, mostly, Stephen Montague’s suite “2 Dirges - 3 Dances” stand out.

FLUID / Duality (Alrealon Music)

Dans la lignée de Scorn et dälek, FluiD propose un hip-hop instrumental (sauf une collaboration de Black Saturn) métissé de noise et de dub. Abrasif mais rythmé, techno sans facilité, multistylistique et multiethnique tout en conservant une belle unité et une attitude rebelle. Du solide.

In the vein of Scorn and dälek, FluiD delivers instrumental hip-hop (except for a collaboration from Black Saturn) blended in with noise and dub. Abrasive but beat-driven, techno-sounding though nothing simplistic or formulaic, multistylistic and multiethnic though coherent, with a rebellous attitude to boost. Sure-footed.

ANTHONY BRAXTON / Trillium E: Wallingford’s Polarity Gambit (Composition No. 237) (New Braxton House)

Magnifique!!! Bien qu’ils occupent une place très importante dans l’œuvre d’Anthony Braxton, peu de gens connaissent ses opéras. Pourquoi? Parce qu’ils coûtent très chers à produire (un seul a été présenté avec mise en scène complète) et à enregistrer. Braxton a planifié un cycle de 12 opéras de quatre actes indépendants chacuns. Cinq ont été composés à ce jour. La version concert de l’un (Trillium R) a été commise sur disque, mais la qualité sonore n’est pas fameuse. Le 11 octobre 2011, pour la première fois paraîtra un opéra complet de Braxton dans un enregistrement studio impeccable. Trillium E (un coffret de 4 CD présentant trois heures de musique, plus un livret de 72 pages) est un tour de force, l’expression la plus cohérente à ce jour de l’impétus théâtral de Braxton. Tout ici concorde à procurer une expérience totale, de la distribution aux notes de livret du compositeur. Parmi les douze chanteurs : Kamala Sankaram, Anne Rhodes, Elizabeth Saunders, Fay Victor, Nick Hallett et Chris DiMeglio. Chaque acte propose un dialogue à cheval entre philosophie et absurde – l’un se déroule sur le pont de l’Enterprise dans l’univers de Star Trek! Humour, science, éléments de Ghost Trance Music et de Diamond Curtain Wall (les électroniques), dans des proportions gigantesques, d’une richesse inépuisable. Trillium E n’est PAS et ce ne sera jamais un bon point de départ pour le néophyte en Braxton, mais c’est un ESSENTIEL pour quiconque souhaite comprendre l’ampleur de l’œuvre du grand maître.

Magnificent!!! Though they are very important to Anthony Braxton’s œuvre, few people know (or even know of) his operas. Why? Because they cost a lot to stage (only one has been fully staged so far) and record. Braxton has planned out a cycle of 12 four-act operas, and five have been composed to this day. One of them, Trillium R was committed to record, in a lacklustre live version. On October 11, 2011, for the first ever a studio recording of a Braxton opera will be released. Trillium E, an impeccably-recorded 4-CD set featuring three hours of music, plus 72-page booklet, is a staggering accomplishment, the most coherent expression to this day of Braxton’s theatrical impetus. Everything here comes together for a total experience, from the cast to the composer’s liner notes. Among the twelve singers are Kamala Sankaram, Anne rhodes, Elizabeth Saunders, Fay Victor, Nick Hallett, and Chris DiMeglio. Each act sets a dialogue on the fence between philosophy and absurdity – one of them takes place on Star Trek’s Enterprise! Humour, science, elements of Ghost Trance Music and Diamond Curtain Wall (the electronics), at a gigantic scale and displaying inextinguishable richness. Trillium E is NOT nor will EVER be a good starting point for Braxton neophytes. However, it is an ESSENTIAL listen for whoever wishes to understand the scope of the great master’s œuvre.
